I would actually guess there are far, far, far more fans of Star Frontiers than Alternity.

Star Frontiers might be old, but it was immensely popular in its day. Alternity sold fairly poorly.

Granted, Alternity probably has more hard-core fans, still playing it, but Star Frontiers is probably looked upon more fondly.

I think it's debatable. Not to mention, in the ghetto that is SFRPG fandom, the difference between X and "far, far, far more" than X is still pretty irrelevant in terms of WotC print runs.

Not true. Alternity''s sales simply didn't meet TSR's unrealistic expectations. In comparison with its peers (i.e., all RPGs which are not D&D), Alternity sold extremely well.

True, it has an aura of nostalgia that Alternity isn't old enough to muster, but I'd argue that it's not enough to justify specifically targeting its fans.

I also think it comes off much less mercenary for d20F to steal bits and pieces from these various old, beloved games than it would if WotC released "Star Frontiers d20." It'd be a huge turnoff for me, at least.

probably not. :)

but IIRC the "effective range" of the weapon is based on firing range performance, not necessarily real-world conditions.
It's actually somewhere in between. It's the maximum range at which the average rifleman can put rounds on target under optimum conditions.

The rifle range does a decent job of simulating optimum conditions.

(as a sidenote, i shoot better without glasses than with them. for some reason i have trouble judging distances when i'm wearing glasses... i've gone so long without them that i seem to mainly judge distance by how blurry things are. wearing glasses seriously screws with my depth perception.)
Hey, the target is supposed to be blurry....that front sight tip is all you need to focus on! ;)

Eight campaign models...

That's quite a few.

Genetech is in there for sure.

If they wanted to recycle some old-school material...Mecha Crusade, Star*Drive, Star Frontiers, F.R.E.E.Lancers, Tangents, Iron Lords of Jupiter...

I assume that Omega World is off-limits [since it's a revamp of Gamma World, which is licensed out]...and Dark*Matter isn't really futuristic.

I would absolutely love to see a "retrofuture" world, a la Buck Rogers. And we know there are rules for jet packs, so maybe...

Heck, at one point, I wrote up all of the races for stardrive, along with klicks and kroath. Printed it up on the wizards board. Still have people asking me about that...
And you throw this around without links? What are you waiting for, post it!

(I've got my own conversion of klicks and kroath. I think my version of the kroath were done very well.)

Anyone know if there's world-creation material in d20F? As in stellar cartography, that is...

I'm 99% sure the preview mentioned it. (If it didn't, I'll be happy to email you the GRAPH system from Alternity. After D20 Future is released :D )

Andy Smith have stated that adding material from d20 Future will be the next SRD* update this August/September.

* He often refers both 3.5e SRD and MSRD as "SRD."

I'm just hoping they finally include Moreaus in the SRD this time.

I guess that since it it using Modern core rule that means there won't be a Vitality/Wound point kind of system. I would have loved such a system, in fact I think futurist settings require such system.

it really takes NO work to use Vitality/Wounds in place of Hitpoints/MassDamage. Just add one more DIE to guns and you're all set. (See C. Ryan's Ultramodern Firearms to see what i'm talking about.)

I would say there WERE more SF fans than Alternity (they're all retired). I would also dare say that there ARE more SF fans than S*D fans. [also keep in mind that Alternity was the system, not the game.] Alternity had the power of the internet to keep it going, while SF came and went.

Honestly, those are just my guesses. I "retired" from gaming during the 90's (the end of TSR as we knew it). But 3E/d20 got me back into it. I can bet MOST gamers have never even heard of SF much less were alive when it came out.

I think the homages to the classic TSR games are great. Great for fans and for new gamers. I say keep them coming.
