d20 Future preview is up!

Whoa, man, this is the fastest review of a game I've ever seen. The book's not even on store shelves and yet you've read the whole thing? Man, that's something amazing!
Well, that's what you get for releasing previews. I hope you (meaning WotC) have learned your lesson about hyping a product. We are a very sick audience.

Yeah, I have a sneaking suspicion that when I see 1200 or 1400 meters range for an M16 that just means that's where the bullet lands if it doesn't hit anything.
correct. i've been out of the Army for about 7 years now, but from what i remember, the maximum "effective" range of an M16 is more on the order of 300 to 500m.

(but even 300m isn't that hard to hit consistently with an M16 that's been zeroed to you, though. there are 300m targets at the qualifying range, and even i with my 20/40 nearsightedness in my shooting eye and no glasses could hit the 300m target at least 50% of the time or better.)

I mean, I know that all I did on this book was copy word for word out of those Alternity books I own.
Honestly, I'd be disappointed if d20F *didn't* draw liberally from Alternity. Alternity was doubleplusgood!

Sooo looking forward to this book. I've been wanting to run SF with the d20M rules ever since I saw Shadow Chasers.

* scoffs *

Hmph! If they did, do you honestly think this will bring back the Alternity fan community back to WotC? I don't think so.

Personally, they should attract Top Secret and Star Frontier fans.

The maximum effective range of the M-16a2 is 550m vs a point target & 800m vs an area target. The maximum range of the projectile is 3600m.

d4 give me a week and I guarantee I can have you hitting that 300m target 99.9% of the time. :D

thanks Krieg. now suddenly i can recall hearing my drill sergeant from Basic saying exactly those same words. :)

hey i still managed to qualify Expert! (and Sharpshooter with the M203 and M60). pretty good for a 92-Yankee. ;)

the preview mentions both the Vrusk and Dralasites... Star Frontiers is back! :)

It also mentions yazirians. Grrrr. I wonder how this will affect these guys:

starfrontiers.com

They've been slinking under the radar since they made that sweetheart deal with TSR way back when.

Can you hit such a target (with corrective glasses) when it's moving and shooting back at you?

Maybe you have Far Shot. I mean, with seven years of being in the army, taking target practice and maybe even being in some firefights... in D20 Modern terms you would have gained a couple of levels.

It would be a crime if they don't credit the Alternity writers for authoring this book. There's nothing new here...

And of course you know this because you've read the book already.
[rolleyes] Oh no, no knee-jerks here at all. [/rolleyes]

probably not. :)

but IIRC the "effective range" of the weapon is based on firing range performance, not necessarily real-world conditions.

(as a sidenote, i shoot better without glasses than with them. for some reason i have trouble judging distances when i'm wearing glasses... i've gone so long without them that i seem to mainly judge distance by how blurry things are. wearing glasses seriously screws with my depth perception.)

i said i've been out of the military for seven years. i was only in for four. and thank goodness, no firefights. :)
