D20 Licenses.

Recently I noted that Kenzer Co. had attained a license to produce Greyhawk material. This was thought to be impossible by the GH fans but obviously it's not and so I'm now curious as to how one goes about getting a license like this.

You buy it from Wizards of the Coast.

Kenzer & Company also have a d20 license that they have that is QUITE different than the free one most of us publish under - all their material is closed content. They also publish material under the Dungeons and Dragons brand, not just d20 trademark. All this is possible through the powers of money and having the right friends and working well with the gentlefolk at WotC

Well, I don't think just anyone can. Kenzer got the rights to all 1e/2e AD&D and D&D material for their Hackmaster game - Greyhawk, Mystara, etc, etc, etc.

IIRC, on the d20 mailing list, Ryan Dancey mentioned it was a somewhat unique situation. Though I imagine it involved a lot of money as well.

Anyway, too bad it's for Hackmaster. I find that about as distasteful as I find SJG's Munchkin. (Except SJG doesn't have the rights to my beloved Mystara. But I digress).

I just heard in a chat that Kenzer Co. bought the rights to 1st/2nd ed. and a few other little goodies for $1 due to WotC publishing some KoDT stuff without their permission.

Interesting story. So... who do I have to kill to get a license? Anthony Valterra?
