i noticed this goof as well. i went over to the wizards boards, but i didn't see a mention of it (i could've overlooked it, though). i imagine the ruling will be important in our game, where i'm playing the doctor...

The Strong Hero "Hardness reduction" talent is useful against this (and yes, I'll be making that talent tree a 2/4/6 reduction)

I don't see why folks feel the need to change this. The standard 1/2/3 isn't better than improved melee damage, no, but it DOES stack, after all.

as Bagpuss mentioned above, the hardness reduction tree was 'errata'd' by Charles Ryan on the WotC boards. i guess he's collecting alot of errata material from the posters there...

Miss a lot with his BAB +0 ?

Heh. Then I guess I do have a House Rule -- I add fractions from multiclasses, then round at the end. So a Smart/Dedicated/Fast Hero with one level in each would have a BAB of .5 +.75 +.75 = +2.0. I'm still working on getting it working with saves and the defense stuff.

But I wasn't really thinking of a third-level hero, in any event -- or someone who got into a lot of melee combat. I was thinking of someone who could develop a plan to deal with the bad guys, then use improved aid and play a trick to give bonuses to his friends and penalties (or even lost actions) to his enemies.

I'd say that fix is overkill.

Stone has a hardness of 8, iron a hardness of 10. I don't really need 6th level heroes who can punch through an inch of iron plate without breaking a sweat.

You wouldn't have 6th level heros that could punch through iron and they would have trouble with stone. The best lethal damage they would have by then is d4+Str, so they would be hardly making a mark in iron except on their best roll.

The fact that they could punch through stone is more to do with the fact D20 Modern is 'fantasy' based and not at all realistic.

Yo Mistah Bags,

Not entirely true on the stone. Real-life martial artists can break rocks with their hands. And not just the cement blocks -- I mean actual rocks.

Yes, I'm a martial artist. No, I can't do it myself. But my buddy showed me how he did it. It's a skill, just like anything else. You find the weak points, you learn how to strike at the right angle, and you practice pummeling things until you can do it without hurting yourself.

We're not talking about straight-on punches. Most of the time, you'd be doing hammer-strikes, which subject your hand to a lot less punishment and still deliver the appropriate force.

Again, not saying it's easy, and doing it is a lot less glamorous than stepping back and doing a massive kiai and then chopping the rock, or however people are imagining it, but with proper training, it can be done.

And if it can be done, in that limimted way, by a good martial artist who trains in it for a long time (and builds up a nasty callous on the heel lf his hand), I find it not implausible to imagine the Strong Hero, who is presumably going to be using a melee weapon and not just his bare hands, doing the same thing.

The ability isn't about mystical powers. It's about learning how to spot the weak stress points and strike them at the right angle to do the most damage. It's training, just like anything else.
