d20 Modern: Two weeks and counting

Personally, I'm not expecting much. I was very disappointed to learn that they were keeping hp and AC, instead of the better (in my opinion) hp and Defense.

I'm not at all excited. The more I hear and read about it, the less likely I am to buy it. I don't think most d20 mechanics are well suited to a modern environment to begin with, and keeping the HP system is especially upsetting.

Maybe its just me, but I demand a greater degree of realism (and lethality) when playing modern-day games. I'll stick to Spycraft for the times I want something James Bond-ish and use something else for the serious stuff.

I pre-ordered it off of Buy.com for $25 with free shipping (4-7 weeks... I should get it sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas).

I figure it's a good deal at that price, even I don't use it for anything more than a 400 page source-book.

d20 modern does use hp and defense.

(I can only assume that you meant to say that you would prefer it use VP/WP, with which I would agree. However, it does use defense rating.)

If you take more points of damage than your Con score in a single hit you have to make a Fort save or you go to -1 HP, do not pass Go, do not collect 200 dollars.

As I understand it, there have been some pretty extensive tweaks to the system to make sure that the Good Guys always take that bad guy with a shotgun seriously.

Hit points means less work importing material from the 500-plus d20 products which already use hit points. It was a tough call to make, but I think it was the right call. It's easy enough to implement VP, if that's the way you like it.

If all goes well, I'll get to do my "Doc Savage meets the Destroyer" game over Christmas.
