d20 Modern Warm Start

People are frequently underwhelmed by the "lack" of d20 Modern support. I think what that translates to is "the market is not totally glutted", but that's just me.

If you nose around the d20 Modern section at RPGNow you will find plenty of sourcebooks... but not many adventures. The reason is discussed by Ranger REG in his post- the range of Modern campaigns is pretty vast.

That's why Inside Vossburg (the closest thing I have ever done to an adventure) is more of an "adventure toolkit"- a map, NPCs, and lots of hooks, so it will be useful to the largest % of the gaming market. That was the result of a long search from me to come up with some adventure material that would find a home in the majority of campaigns.

It's true--the majority of the stuff on the d20 Modern section of RPG Now are player or GM aids. However, keep digging and be sure to hit the "more" button at the bottom of the page to see the whole list. There ARE some pretty good adventures in the mix, and not all of them are by 12 to Midnight. (joke)

Seriously, Last Rites is a low-level adventure with lots of atmosphere. I think it would be a good introduction to what you can do with the system. Read some of the customer comments though, and you can decide for yourself.

And related to some of the previous comments... I'm looking for non-FX adventures, so I don't find this too useful :( D20 Modern fragmentation in action.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I was also a little disappointed to find the heavy reliance on supernatural elements in the Wizards adventures (which is not to say that a lot of them aren't very good); it seems to me, after a day's investigation, that the arcana/FX campaign has become the presumed norm when it comes to d20 Modern. I can certainly understand why, but it's not where I want to start off, even if it's eventually where the adventuring takes us.

Plenty of suggestions to follow up in this thread today...

Frankly, where I am concerned, this addition of D&D stuff into d20 Modern really sucks. I am really not interested in d20 Modern if it is to have ogres, bugbears, kobolds, typical spells (fireballs and the like) and what not again. For this I use D&D. That said, I like introduction of the supernatural into d20 Modern, otherwise IMO it really quickly becomes boring. Yet this supernatural or science fiction, as to be relevant with a modern or sci-fi setting. Illithids are cool, but are too closely associated with D&D for my own tastes...

I agree. Even with the supernatural-laden Dark Matter, the magic and monsters weren't similar to DnD monsters. There was a D*M adventure (I think it was called London Calling) that involved a rakshasha. Now, 3e hadn't been released yet, so it wasn't easy to do a point-by-point comparison with the nearly empty 2e rakshasha stat block. Yet, they managed to Alternity rakshasha different. Instead of giving it the 2e genius intellect, they gave it an Int of 8 (that's barely average Int in Alternity terms) and, of course, it's magical abilities were very different, without even approximating it's 2e magical abilities. That way, I didn't feel ripped off (I could just grab the rakshasha from 3e and modify it's CR if I wanted to use one in a Modern campaign, but it would be boring - and this is true even if such a DnD monster is in the D20 Modern book).

Furthermore, converting orcs and the like is a piece of cake. There wasn't any need to convert them for me, and there certainly wasn't any need to give them three free feats while you're at it (they can spend feat slots like anybody else).
