D20 Spelljammer

Hmmn... Never played SpellJammer, but I did like the imagery the covers had... Opened up the mind to new things if you ask me.

I kinda like what I hear about the goofiness... sort of a flash gordon (pulpy) like atmosphere... What's so silly about hippo looking characters? I think skinny guys with pointed ears are silly. *shrug* To each their own. Though the mage powered ships do sound rather limiting.

We'll see I guess...

I did Spelljammer as a player, and had fun with it, but I don't think I'd want to revisit it. If I want space, I'd probably find a different game. It just doesn't seem to mesh with the idea of a fantasy world for D&D. But hey, whatever floats your flotsam.

Shadowrun I've enjoyed running - did four complete, long term campaigns with 1st and 2nd edition. One of these days I'll do 3rd - I have all the books, just haven't the time nor the players - we're all involved in three other games right now.

Hmm. I never touched Spelljammer, precisely because it seemed kinda goofy, didn't take itself seriously, and had the (IMHO) stupid "crystal spheres sort of = different planes" bit going.

If they have altered the cosmology and gotten rid of some of the goofier aspects like hamsters and giff, I might just check it out.

I don't have a problem with pulp; I just don't want it here.

Considering that I have never played Spelljammer, I really can't add anything useful to this discussion.:D

For those interested in Giffs and Space Hamsters, look no further than our very own CREATURE CATALOGUE:

I'm somewhat apprehensive, based on the brief blurb. While I'm not really married to the goofier aspects of Spelljammer (I don't think any Giff ever appeared onstage during any of my Spelljammer adventures) the blurb we have seems determined to distance itself from the original Spelljammer, and updates done by people who don't really like the source material never really turn out well. (Exhibit A - the American "Godzilla.")

On the other hand, it's just a blurb. So we'll see.

'course, with Dragonstar out, is there really a need for Spelljammer to be re-released?

I did like Spelljammer, by the way, especially the tongue-in-cheek goofiness...

That's the good thing about d20: we can have both! Everyone can decide which they prefer or even mix them both together (Spelljammer with the Dragon Empire running things, magic-tech, etc.).

I don't know very much about Spelljammer at all. However, from reading this thread the Giff people sound cool.

I think a hippo person could look very menacing. I wonder if maybe it was poor artwork that made everyone think they're goofy. (I haven't seen any of the artwork of them)

So are the same people who are against Giffs for or against Minotaurs in their campaigns?

I'm thinking more and more about subscribing to Dungeon, but I had to squeeze just to get cash for Dragon. And now I need to upgrade some software... *sigh* Damn college job...

If you get it now you can get a free copy of Green Ronin's Legions of Hell. There is an add in Dragon 292 on page 111. Of course you may not have wanted to know that.
