d20 WWII?

Speaking of Ubermench, Godlike is another WWII based RPG, albeit one revolving around soldiers with super powers...:)

It also uses it's own system, but does have D20 rules in an appendice.
Right, I am planning on checking Godlike out in more depth soon; if anyone has any experience with their stuff please lemme know what ya think. Basically what happenned is that I had planned on doing a side campaign for our group of WWII stuff, and we had also gotten interested in some Supers stuff as well (particularly after picking up Blood and Vigilance and loving it). When we came to a point a couple weeks ago to do one or the other, we couldnt make up out minds until someone finally said 'Hey, why not WWII WITH Supers, like Capt American and Bucky vs. the Red Skull?'. Well, everybody just thought that was a great idea (including me), but it gave me about 4 days to try and mesh it together into a sensible game (throwing my previous campaign idea out the window). Hence doing some quick steals from limited Godlike and Wierd War II stuff.

We're going to do our second session this week, and our regular GM (OldDrewId) has one of the zaniest character ideas I think I've *ever* heard, but he is really good at surprising me with nutty characters.

Ledded, you are an inspiration to us all. I only wish I had your patience and talent. I will gobble up any story hour you put together.

Thanks for the info on Hell on Earth. I think I will hold off for now. My WWII campaign is on hold and will be for a while.

Dana, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I appreciate your imput.
Gee Fenzer, I appreciate the sentiments, though I dont know how much inspiration I 'inspire' in anybody; I can't even get my 3-year old twin girls to consistently pee in the potty, even while singing the insanity-laden toilet training songs :). I wanted to get a start on the Story Hour last week, but I hit a bit of a snag; I'm blocked a bit on how to kick it off. It should resolve itself soon, particularly since OldDrewId's character (to be introduced tomorrow night) has inspired me to write a whole section on his guy.

And also thanks again from me, Dana. I've reworked all of the stuff I've gathered on WWII Artillery with a lot of your input until I'm fairly happy with it (and my players aren't... you know how players love being shot at by people they cant see).

Bah. Go Return to Castle Wolfenstein and put in das Übersoldat instead.
Hey man, can you pimp me out a link to some info on these? I havent heard that much RPG info about them (other than being familiar with the Return to Castle Wolfenstein computer game).

I will vouch for both Godlike and GURPs WWII as totally excellent supplements for running a WWII game. I also have an official history of WWII I did for the Vigilance print book I will email you if you drop me a line offlist Ledded, but I would also check out both Godlike and GURPs WWII.

Chuck

And thanks again, Chuck, for the info. Very helpful.

We had another session of WWII-Supers Tuesday night, and it was a blast (pun intended) again. We snapped some nice digital pics which I will post as part of the upcoming Story Hour. Yep, look for "We were like gods once... a WWII Supers Story Hour" to appear sometime very soon in a forum near you, as soon as I can edit enough 'suck' out of it for public consumption... :)

Well, since I coughed up an opinion of Hell on Earth (HOE) in this thread, I thought I'd cough up an opinion of World War II Heroes (WW2H) in it as well.

WW2H is vastly superior to HOE. While focused exclusively on the European Western Front theater of operations, WW2H is also completely D20 Modern compliant. The weapons fit properly in with the stats provided in the D20M core rules, as do the vehicles. It is also a non-FX product as well, if you're looking to stay away from the superman experiments and occult slants the Nazi's seemed to fawn over.

It sounds like WW2H is more like what I was looking for. Dont get me wrong, I found quite a few parts of HoE usefull, but had many of the same issues as Dana with it also.

I think on that reccomendation, Dana, I'll have to pick up a copy soon.

My players have really enjoyed the WWII gaming so far, and the one reluctant guy in the group was converted whole-heartedly after I loaned him my Band of Brothers DVD set :)

I understand about the conversion thing. I don't want to hijack this thread anymore than I already have but I finally, after how many years now, 4?, baught Saving Private Ryan on DVD.

I was reluctant because I had a hard time with it the first time watching it in the theatre, sat next to a vet who didn't say much when it was over. I didn't want to watch it the second time largley due to the "stabbing-fight" scene. It really effected me for some reason. But, after watching it this last time, at home, I was truely moved. Despite my feelings that Speilburg went a little Hollywood the second half of the movie, I can honestly say that it is an inspiring film. It is one that re-affirms my belief in what we did there.

Anyway, Band of Brothers was great, too. In my opinion, it's hard to go wrong with Tom Hanks, in front of or behind the camera.

Sorry, waxing a little patriotic.

Yeah, that knife fight scene was so intense and personalized, it gives me the heebies every time I watch it. I do think the whole move was a bit "hollywood-ized", but less so than the usual Speilburg tripe. All in all, I think it was a good war movie, but a bit over the top at points. Same for one made around the same time by HBO called When Trumpets Fade; it was a bit overdramatic, but still a very horrific portrayal of one of the nastiest fights the US has ever been in (Hurtgen Forest).

Band of Brothers was some of the best war cinema I've ever seen. Maybe it's because they tried to stay reasonably close to the stories of the men, or they learned a few things from Saving Pvt Ryan, or whatever. Regardless, it was one of the best miniseries/war movies I've ever seen. Sure, there have been a lot of other great WWII films (The Longest Day, Bridge over the River Kwai, Guns of Navarrone, Das Boot, Stalingrad, etc) but I just loved BofB.

At least when their German tanks came rolling out at the GI's they didnt look just like Shermans... <cough> <cough> big red one <cough> <cough>

The guy I gave Band of Brothers to didnt like Saving Pvt Ryan; he was skeptical at first but I talked him into watching them and he is totally hooked on BofB. They've changed his whole opinion of what war movies can be like.

One of the most memorable scenes from BofB for me is the one that starts out with the captian, sorry I forget his name, running. You hear his heart beating. He is alone, crests a hill, and comes face to face with a young german soldier scrambling to get up. The captain hesitates for just a moment then kills him. The episode was a flash back of how he came to that moment. It was very well done.

Anyway, I applaud the efforts of Speilburg and Hanks. WWII is something that cannot be forgotten. And why this country still has no official memorial makes absolutely no sence to me. I don't understand.

besides the one mentioned here, I would highly recommend GURPS WWII line (even though not d20).

Hell, one book in particular shines out, wierd wars. It's written by the same guy who did supressed transmissions and has everything from what if's, to new technology, to strange true events.
