Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I feel like folks spending a loot of time min maxing -- hi r/daggerheart -- are missing the point. But even so it seems super common on that sub.
Eh?

Building super over the top characters, ie, char op, is something Daggerheart supports. But I do think that social game conventions, narrative focus and the way hope/fear are generated gives DMs more tools to deal with that. (Hopefully? Lol, I've yet to sit down and play so I'm still theorycrafting here).

Like, I do think Druids are powerful, but I don't think they're as gamebreaking as some say or even in need of nerfing. Though that might be me wanting to play a Druid, lol. I don't believe they'll make the Guardian or Warrior player feel superfluous.

The mechanics might support it, but the player principles don't. It isn't a GM (NOT DM) issue, it is a player issue because DH specifically requires players to share the spotlight. Char-op is a problem in that regard.

That implies Character optimization and spotlight hogging are the same thing, which I don't agree with. In any event, theory crafting and building optimized PCs is a fun part to do when one isn't at the gaming table.

CharOp is spotlight hogging in the sense of utterly overshadowing the rest of the group while you have the spotlight.

Yes, it absolutely can be fun to build weird PCs and see if you can break the game. What’s absolutely not cool is trying to bring those characters to the table.

Yes, in some ways Hope will churn faster as it can be generated by action rolls, where as Stress is only recovered by resting?
Or potions. And critical success - each doubles is a extra good hit, gain a hope and clear a stress.
Or possibly there are abilities that allow Stress to be recovered?
There are.
Lv2 Bone Strategic Approach
Lv3 Valor Critical Inspiration
Lv5 Bone Signature Move
Lv6 Valor Rise Up
Lv9 Blade Gore and Glory
Lv9 Valor Lead By Example
Lv10 Bone Swift Step

CharOp is not necessarily about spotlight hogging. It's about seeing what works and exploring the limits of the system, often to build an offbeat character.

No one was bringing Pun-Pun to the table. And the people bringing the broken characters generally were "net decking"

Not necessarily, no. But it’s quite often the result. And that result is known to be a thing. And it’s not seen by many optimizers as a deterrent, leading to the practice being even more off putting to most non-optimizers.

You’ll need to explain the jargon.
