Definately a guulvorg, not a regular worg...but maybe the guulvorg killed the worg and took it's stuff 'cuz the guulvorg is all "I've got War in my name! And 4e has a fetish for war-whatevers!"

Or, perhaps they only included a pic for the "war worg" because they can go to the regular worg and say "It looks like a wolf, do you REALLY need a pic for that? Frickin' google image search "wolf" if you really don't know, kid."

This has been the first art preview that I really can't stand.
That thing looks nothing like a wolf. It's a real pity, because I remember loving the atmosphere in the 3rd edition Worg illustration, even if the creature itself simply looked like a big, malignant wolf.

Ah, maybe I'm old hat, but I just never felt that emaciated, spiky, sabertooth ankylosaur-raptors fit the "Worg" image.

IF this is a barghest good for WOTC, if this is the Worg....well my optimisim has finally taken a hit. New directions are not nescessarily good directions for more iconic creatures.....it feels like the artist heard a story from a bard about some demon wolf (a barghest) and mixed it up with a worg. Lets hope that in the interest of space WOTC didn't combine the barghest and the worg because they thought they served the same function because that would be a very large mistake in their part (pretty sure it didn't happen and hope someone confirms that this is not a worg.)

Perhaps, since this is just a brief description, there are different variants? This is the barghest/guulvorg worg, while another is a natural worg, etc.

Since you figure not every monster now simply has one type, there are multiple variants.
That'd be my guess as well...

You're right, the 4E worg is actually a version of the 3.5 guulvorg:

Guulvorg, in Goblin, means "war worg".

NE Huge Magical Beast, CR 13
Immune to cold, DR 10/magic
Special attacks:
Boiling Blood (fire damage against any adjecent foe that damages it with piercing or slashing weapons, Reflex half)
Quick Tail (attacks with bite and tail as a standard action)
Trip

Ah...that makes more sense now. The picture in the MM is almost an exact duplicate of the MM5 image.

So the Guulvorg probably is now under the Worg entry as a higher levelled version of the worg...No need for a picture of the regular worg since, really, it's a wolf (google is your friend...)

Yeah, that's probably the best bet (would it hurt to have a worg in that picture, since the guulvorgs are described as being protective of worgs?). I think we can call off the dogs now ;) .

I think the guulvorg could be made to look more wolf-like if it had ears (like the 3.5 one did), a wolf-like nose and more fur on the sides of the head.

Do not like...WAY too ugly...

I mean, I know a worg is a bigger and uglier wolf, but that doesn't even look like a wolf...

Have to agree. I thought for a minute that it was a mutated displacer beast...

Maybe not...

The Guulvorg might've killed the worg and took its name. Think about it for a moment...IF you have an entry for wolf, and using the "levelling" schtick they previewed early, you would end up with a worg.

WOTC might have said, "screw that, what's the point" and just gave one entry for Worg and used the Guulvorg stats. Although I agree they probably have Worg as a separate entry, one for the standard worg and one for these worg protectors a la the grell and grick entries we saw....

Now, that critter would be fine as a monster from Stephen King's Dark tower 3: The Wastelands or an an extra planar critter. Maybe even a worg for a far realm tainted goblin tribe. But as a normal worg, i find it detestable.

Also, maybe i have been exposed to too much on the internet, but i really dislike the overall shape of the tail bulb.
