Dare I ask... Stealth?

It's certainly true that Shades can use cover granted by their allies to hide. I also vaguely recall the ruling that you're talking about, though I can't seem to find where it might be located.

This too is included with every printing of the Stealth rules ever.

Most questions involving stealth are actually explicitly addressed within that rule set. It seems long and complex, but 99% of all questions are answered directly in there.

There's not a lot of 'rulings' to be made. It's not a 'ruling' that you can't use allies for cover... the rules say explicitly you cannot. It's not a 'ruling' that you can't make a stealth roll to become hidden during the same action you stop being hidden, it's explicitly written in the rules.

Excellent advice/updates everyone, many thanks (especially to Truename). Now my group has a set of rules we can all agree on, and debate endlessly :P
But in all seriousness, many thanks. Now off to read The Hidden Club, thanks to Neubert.

Lots of great advice in this thread, I just wanted to clarify a couple of corner cases that have come up for my Rogue|Warlock/Assassin...

6. When you reveal yourself (by attacking, for example), you retain the Hidden condition until your entire action has been resolved. For example, if you have a power that allows you to shift 2 squares and then attack, you remain hidden until the end of the attack, even if you shift out of cover.
You actually "retain the benefits of being Hidden," rather than retaining the Hidden condition. Minor quibble.

7. You can't reveal yourself then hide again during the same action. For example, you couldn't use a power to attack, shift 2 squares, and hide. You have to use a new action--for example, attack and shift two squares as a standard action power, then use a move action to hide.
That's definitely the rule, but it's worth noting that some Rogue cunning sneak powers specifically break it, by saying "if you were hidden when you made the attack, you may make a Stealth check to become hidden after the attack." So there are some cases where it's possible to become hidden again in the same action, but they're narrow and not easy to fulfill.

Finally, it's possible to obtain at-will "become hidden" stealth checks in heroic tier by combining cunning sneak with shadow walk. You need to be a mix of Rogue, Warlock, and Assassin. ;)

If we introduced every discussion of general rules with discussions of specific exceptions that are obvious in their exceptionry, we'd never get any discussions of general rules done.
