Dark*Matter D20 Modern: I need more players!

I'm running a D20 Modern game loosely based on the Alternity Dark*Matter setting. Unfortunately, three of my players have had to quit over the course of the last adventure, so I'm in need of some fresh blood...

Firstly, if you're not familiar with the setting, check out the Exit 23 adventure that we've just finished to see if it's for you. Then head over to the character thread to see who's already in the game, and the kind of people your PC would be working with. Still like what you see? Then read on...

Character Creation rules:
  • 3rd level.
  • 32 point buy for ability scores.
  • Humans characters only.
  • Your starting Wealth score will be 5 + Occupation bonus + any feat or other bonuses.
  • Profession checks for Wealth gain at 2nd and 3rd levels are treated as if you'd rolled at 10.
  • Your character must work for the Hoffmann Institute in some capacity.

In addition to these rules requirements, I'm going to need a couple more things from you. Firstly, I want dedicated players. I'd like to be looking at a post rate of once a day from the players, or once every two days as a minimum. This isn't to say that I'm going to kick you out of the game if you go on holiday or have RL problems, but it does mean that I'll get a bit peeved if you don't post when you're able.

Secondly, a decent background for your PC really helps the other players interact with your character. It doesn't have to be anything terribly detailed or interesting, but I'd like it if it gave some indication of your character's motives and general personality. Just stats and no history doesn't make a character, and is just plain lazy ;)

Right, if after all of that you still want to play (you fools! :D) then feel free to post here. If I get interest from more than three people I'm going to have to make a choice about who to keep. I'll be basing my decision on background, followed by how well the character fits with the rest of the group. Anyone who doesn't make it in this time round will still be on a list of alternates should anyone drop out of the game.

Thanks for reading this, and I look forwards to seeing your characters :)

I've read over the story, and I'm def. game for a try. I'll work up a character tomorrow sometime. Should I post it here or the rogues gallery?

Cheers,

Good to have you with us :) Post it here, so we can work through any issues with the character before putting up on the Rouge's Gallery thread.

Hmm.. let's see.. what sort of guy to do huh... any room left?

Thinking ex-SEAL or maybe psychic type (if no actual psi options, a debunker type.. wonder what base class would work for that.. dedicated/smart or charismatic?.. hmmmmm...)

Oh..and what books you use?

Thanks for the welcome. I have a rough cut of the character down; I'll post a polished version later, after I'm done with my school nonsense! So far he's a hardcore scientician, working his way toward Field Scientist.

Cheers,

If there is still a slot, can I join? It sounds pretty cool, and I love D20 Modern.

Apperance: Looking average has always helped Eric. Average height, average weight, and looking pretty normal, Eric never stood out. Wich always helped, when one was a Detective for the Hoffman Institute. Almost always wearing some sort of T-Shirt and cargo pants, Eric looks like your average person of Scandavian decent.

Personality: Eric has been known as two diffrent people. When he is on a case, he is as determined as determined can be. However, when hes off the job, or when he can be on a job, he is light-hearted, quick tongued, quick witted, but still stubborn as a bull when he wants to be.

History: Eric was born of Icelandic imigrants. His father tried to get him interested in the family fishing buisness [Viking's Fishery, in Boston]. However, he showed no interests in fishing. He wanted to be a police investigator. Joining the BPD Academey, he dropped out 4 months into his last year, after a strange incident, in wich two men in suits shot at some... thing that tried to eat him. He later found out they worked for The Hoffman Insitute. Joining up took some effort, but he managed. Soon, he was doing a few small jobs for the Hoffman Institute. He is rather satisfied right about now.

Right, both the Psionic advanced classes will be available, along with the Wild Talent feat. The Mage and Occultist classes are also both available, as is the Acolyte, although Acolytes are very rare.

As for books, I only own the D20 Modern core rule book, but I'm open to material from other sources. Weapons from Ultramodern Firearms should be fine (although anything requiring a military licence is going to be hard to get), and I might allow feats/PrCs/other stuff on a case-by-case basis. E-mail me with the details of any non-core rules you want to use, and I'll give you a yes or no based on if it looks balanced.

Sounds good. I don't think we've really got any tech-focused characters.

WhatKu: Like the character, looks good :) I'll check over the stats tomorrow, but at first glance everything looks solid rules-wise.

Appearance: Oliver moves with a grace that is somewhat surprising given his slightly gangly appearance. He is tall, with blue eyes, and brown hair, which he keeps short and spiky. He is also much given to physical demonstration, and often makes elaborate hand movements while speaking.

Personality: Given that his regular communication is with machines and computers, Oliver can often become impatient when dealing with people. While tending towards introversion, when drawn out he can be quite friendly and gregarious

History: Oliver Turpin grew up in a single parent household, raised by his mother who had to put in long work hours to support them both. Rather than spend time alone in front of the TV, he spent most of his after school hours in the library. His mother encouraged this, hoping his education would provide a better future than she could. Indeed, even at a young age Oliver demonstrated a knack for computers and electronics, and paid his way through college by writing software for local businesses. Upon graduation he was recruited by headhunters from the Hoffman Institute, and concerned more with the resources they offered him than the institutes focus, went to work for them. Recently however, Oliver has expressed a desire to move away from the monitors he?s sat behind most of his life and engage in field work, and begun training with that goal in mind.

That should be it! It's my first time rolling up a d20 Modern character, so Let me know if I miscalculated something. I was also fuzzy on how to figure wealth/equipment, but I figure most of his stuff is company issue.

Cheers,
morrolan

Matt's profile:
“Listen up, doc, I don’t pay you to sit around and scribble in that book, I pay you to help the nightmares go away.” Matthew likes his shrink, but finds it infuriating when the hunched man continues to nod to himself and write in his small book of notes.

“Yes, yes, I apologize, Matthew. So, please, once more can you tell me about what happened when you were thirteen?” The therapist had heard the story ten times before. Matthew’s father was a reporter investigating the cult followings of Michel Galvin and begin to get threats.

“Listen doc, you know what happened. Why don’t you just give me the meds and I can be on my way. I’ve got an important date tonight. That blonde number I was tellin’ you about…” The doctor sighs to himself. Poor boy. After his parents were killed by that madman, he has never been able to cope. He is just obsessed.

“Matthew, I will give you a week’s worth of the sleeping medication, but you must come to see me again next week. The only way you can learn and grow from these experiences is if you continue to come to therapy.” Obsessed. A Yale graduate in Religious studies, all because of Michel Galvin. Dead ten years, Matthew cannot seem to stop researching him. He can’t even be bothered to run his firm anymore.

“Alright, doc, if I’ve got my meds, we’re done here.” Matthew pushes himself out of his chair before straightening his neatly pressed shirt and taking his suit jacket off of the hanger. “I’ll see you next week. Don’t forget to call in the prescription.” Without another word, Matthew was out the door. If only the meds helped the nightmares. Demonic creatures devouring my poor parents. “Well, back to the office,” he murmured to himself, “I’ve got work to be doing.” Touching his holster concealed beneath his clothing he makes his way back to the Hoffman Institute.

Sorry about the delay in giving any feedback on the characters. I've been really busy over the last few days, but things are quieting down again for me. I'll check over everyone's characters tomorrow or Thursday, and I hope to start the game up again by next Monday at the latest.

Thanks for your patience.
