Darkness + Ranged Attacks

Okay. Couldn't find an answer from previous threads (and I know they were numerous), so...

From the SRD

Darkness...
...This spell causes an object to radiate shadowy illumination out to a 20-foot radius. All creatures in the area gain concealment (20% miss chance).

Does that mean that only creatures within the area of effect get the concealment?

Can they fire at targets outside of the radius and not suffer the 20% miss chance?

Thanks in advance.

Provided that the exterior of the globe is well-lit, then yes, the person in the globe will not suffer any ill-effects. It is like shooting at someone holding a torch in the dark of night.

Are you sure that is correct Caeleddin?

("Provided that the exterior of the globe is well-lit, then yes, the person in the globe will not suffer any ill-effects. It is like shooting at someone holding a torch in the dark of night").

If it is then I have been playing it wrong all along.

Arbados - Pretty sure. A normally shadowy area (without the Darkness spell) grants concealment as well. But if you walk near a torch, you lose that concealment. It didn't matter if the archer that is shooting at you is in the shadows or not. You lose concealment.

Hypersmurf - Just noticed you are in NZ. Which part? Sheep-shagger country? :D

HyperSmurf - Well, bugger me! (Blame the ad :P)

You looking for a 3.5 game to join or have an opening in your group(s) for a fellow Aucklander looking for more RP groups in the area?

Not at present, I fear... having enough trouble finding time for my own group right now!

Hypersmurf - Not a problem. If you or anyone you know want to join a group of RP newbies then drop me a line. I am getting a group organised now but they are mostly virgins.

It depends on one's interpretation of 'a square that grants concealment'.

To expand on this:

SRD said:
To determine whether your target has concealment from your ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line from this corner to any corner of the target’s square passes through a square or border that provides concealment, the target has concealment.

It comes down to, does the spell cause the area to be dark or just the occupants. In 3.0 I would have said that it does offer concealment outside the effect, so if you're still using that (I believe it's fairly common), then they should probably get concealment. However 3.5 changed it, and now it states:

SRD said:

So, in 3.5, it looks like the spell only creates a magical "natural" darkness that can be seen out of perfectly. Only those within the area are affected, and then only creatures! ;)
