DCC is DDNext

I'm going to make a declaration. DCC RPG is Dungeons and Dragons Next, but WotC hasn't figured that out yet. Every time I read one of Mike Mearls articles on design goals for DDN, I realize that the good folks at Goodman Games have come to the same conclusion, already addressed the issue, and are releasing the game in May 2012 instead of starting playtesting in May 2012.

DCC has already captured the look and feel of Old School Dungeons and Dragons by going back to the original source material created by Gygax and Arneson and even hiring the original artists to create the artwork.

I spent years playing old school D&D. I have no interest in going back to it. From what I have read, DCC is all about the worst kinds of old school play that I left behind long ago when I grew up.

I have zero interest in random character generation, killer dungeons, DMs out to screw you, items and spells that screw you as much as your enemies, cruel random death, etc.

Goodman Games has already given me the game that I want and I trust them to do right by the game. WotC 'might' have a game out later this year, but I have very little faith that they will produce the game that I want to play.

Then why are you here? Instead of shilling your game on this forum, go play DCC and have fun with it. Or Castles and Crusades, or OSRIC, or Labyrinth Lord, any one of many OSR retro-clones that all offer exactly the same thing.

It sounds like you have more problems with crappy DMs than any particular game system. Hopefully, you will find better DMs in the future. Or, rather, those experiences have let you to become a DM and learn from the mistakes of others.

I'm here because every time I read an article by a DDN designer, it sounds like they are dealing with a problem that Goodman Games has already thought of, solved, and is putting on a book shelf right now. So, for those people who like what they are reading about the possible future of DDN, then there is no need to wait. But, feel free to wait if you're sure that WotC will give you what you're looking for.

D&DN is not going with such a simple approach to race and class, and is not going the lethality/mortality route of DCC, either.

It seems to me that DCC is doing an "old school game", whereas D&DN is going for an "old school feel".

Nevetheless, DCC isn't D&D.

Sorry, I came off somewhat snide. My apologies. :)

But I do disagree with you that they have solved a number of these issues. 5e is trying to reconcile different playstyles and different generations of gamers who all have different editions they enjoy.

DCC is really focused on only one of those playstyles. They may do the OSR play style very well, but as someone who likes both Pathfinder and 4e, its exactly the opposite of what I'm looking for in a game.

No worries! And I totally agree that DDC is not for everyone. I made sure to say that in my review of the system. As DDN is trying to answer questions about randomization, critical hits/fumbles, and character death, DCC has already decided to include all of those into the game. So, if you're someone who doesn't like those things, then DCC may not be for you. I'm just trying to build awareness that if these game design concepts interest you, then there is already a system out there that does all of that and more and you won't have to wait a year or more before it is released.

For me, DCC is already the game I want to play and I trust that Goodman Games will do a good job with it. I think they have put out great products for 3e and 4e and I think they will continue to do so for DCC. So, based on that, I say that DCC is DDN for me. The only reason why I care about what WotC is doing is because they have the marketing money and brand name recognition that they have a huge influence on the hobby industry.

I've tried to DL the beta rules, but it looks like they took the page down? Are they still available anywhere does anyone know?

It will be available late May according to Goodman. Goodman Games gave everyone who pre-ordered the book through their website a free PDF copy of the book which went out a few weeks ago (which explains all the reviews that have popped up).
