DCs for Knowledge checks about monsters too dang high

I like this alternative with one exception.

I would combine the basic and advanced info and put it into the DC 10 advanced category.

The reason is that regardless of character knowledge, player knowledge will jump into the game (even if the player does not try to abuse that knowledge) the moment the creature's name is mentioned.

Sure, your player might not pull out a torch when the DM says the word Troll, but he also might not run up and fight the creature in melee either.

A a preemptive adjustment to metagamers ;)

I see your point. Well, the system is robust enough to accept that fix. ;) What i like is that because of the way the check's are setup, the availability of information is in the DM's hands (he sets the monster's "Rareness level").

The degrees of info available could probably get some more tweaking, but they're enough for my games.
