DDM: Underdark preview 2

Ankhegs!

That's just cruel. I want to buy a bunch of Star Wars minis, but that wicked cool acidic insect compels me. :( "I was in the Gold Box games," it whispers. "Not buying me or trading for me would be like spitting on Curse of the Azure Bonds." And it was so.

You know, the really cool thing is, we've still only seen about a third of the minis.

Of course, it's probably the coolest third, and we've probably got a few "WTF?" design decisions like the wrackspawn, celestial dire badger, and giant frog, but I'll bet there are still some cool surprises ahead.

Giant Frogs are classics! They were in the Village of Hommlet. :D

Yes, it's shaping up to be a really good set. (With regard to the Wrackspawn, there were other minis they wanted to do first in Angelfire, but they proved too problematic to sculpt, so it fell back to the Wrackspawn).

Angelfire has been great so far for me - Underdark looks even better.

Cheers!

I guess that's possible, but couldn't they just have regular vermin and let the player call it fiendish or celestial or whatever?

Well - then the RPG stats would be wrong wouldn't they? Does it really make a difference either way. I like have the cards handy with RPG stats for the summon spells.

One thing that they only came to recently was making the DDM stats tougher than the RPG stats. In previous sets, giving an animal or vermin a template made it tough enough to be useful in DDM.

Cheers!

Thanks Merric! Really appreciate the work you put in to keeping us up-to-date.

As someone who uses the WoTC minis purely for gaming sessions I can say I'm very happy with how Underdark is shaping up. Initially I moaned at the thought of yet more drow minis but I was wrong indeed.

Ankheg, Gray Render and Dark Creeper ... looks like I'll need to convince my wife that the family really needs another 5 or 6 booster packs. ;)

Celestial dire badgers are *essential*. They're basically the only summon monster I monster that's worth anything for players. I've seen them pull more than a few parties butts out of the fire. So I'm HAPPY that miniature finally showed up.

Personally, I think the giant frogs are pretty cool too. If only because they're the "throwback" miniature.

We just need a flumph mini now... :-)

So, anyone want to start a pool on how many dwarves will be in Underdark?

I believe the correct answer would be 'too darned many'.

I'm sick of dwarves & kobolds in every freaking set. I know, I know, they have to put in things for those who missed the earlier sets, but... ugh!

I like my Celestial Dire Badgers too. They're just so adorably cute with those baby blue eyes

The problem is not with the number of dwarves but rather with the number of dwarves equipped in exactly the same way. Hey look, I'm a fighter dwarf with an axe! Gimme a dwarven psion or something.

I've got some many NPC minis at this point, I've got a fairly good match for just about any character.

I really wouldn't mind more rogue and ranger melee types... There just doesn't seem to be that many so far.
