Defensive Healing Word Cheese

Also powers that last 'until the end of the encounter.'

Yes... that is their duration. Which is why adding 'until the end of the encounter' would fix the power in question.

That's not a special 'you can't extend their duration beyond this' maximum rule, though. Not unless people are having >50 round encounters, in which case, shoot yourself now ;)

That's the issue, no duration listed. 50 round encounters.... oh dear. I can't even imagine, our group can barely handle 10 rounders...

What the hell was I thinking; will need to retrain from Shielding Word to Defensive Healing Word when my cleric levels. Because I am all about cheese especially Wensleydale and crackers.

I like saving my Healing Word power for the parties front line melee and using other healing powers for everyone else. But since the party spends a few short rests between encounters, the +4 to ALL defenses on the next attack might be of more benefit.

In theory that bonus could stay in effect forever... well until the next attack.

My longest encounter went for 55 rounds before the PCs convinced the opposition to turn on its master(s) while they escaped. The conversation took about two rounds.

That was one brutal slug-fest. It took about 3 hours to run, and the denouement took about six minutes. Go figure.

I think this should probably be errated to last until end of encounter or even until end of next round.

What is it with the cheese and bacon? You need to name something after lettuce and tomatoes to keep the game healthier.

Hmm... everyone?

Unless I'm reading it wrong, the D&D Insider Compendium says "When you use your Healing Word, the target also gains a power bonus to all defenses equal to your charisma modifier against the next attack made against him or her."

Am I missing something (again)?... :)
No, your not missing anything. In the character builder the feat says +2 bonus to defenses against the next attack.

So you could use healing word before the next fight and have a bonus against the first attack made against you, but that is it.

If the 5 minute duration rule applies here... then while your waiting for 5 minutes til your healing word recharges, the bonus would disappear.

Which is precisely the reason to ask them to add a limiter, like the 5 minute one. It's fine as long as it doesn't carry over from encounter to encounter.

I think the way to fix this problem is not to let the PCs stack multiple short rests back to back. I used to allow this when my party only included a cleric b/c I didn't really see any reason not to allow it.

However, my party now includes a bard. the bards "song of rest" is specifically designed to prevent this sort of behavior b/c all PCs add the static bonus to all healing surges spent during that rest... but it also signaled to me that the other leaders were probably intended NOT to be allowed to apply their healing power bonuses during a short rest (otherwise, song of rest is redundant) unless they didn't spend their healing powers during the preceding encounter.

So now, a "short rest" is that stretch of time between encounters, not something the PCs actually have to do. It is automatic and includes all of those post encounter activities that are so common: healing, looting, searching for secret doors, etc... and it lasts as long as it needs to... but the PCs don't get to recharge their powers and then have an encounter that doesn't include any challenges.

I guess I sort of look at this the same way as the warlock that carries around the bag of mice to curse and kill to trigger pact boons... awfully cheesy.
