I disagree! PCs will spend more time interacting with the mortal servants who make up the church and much of its doctrine. Gods should rarely, if ever be seen "in person" but should be felt through visions, signs, portents, omens, etc.
Why's that? In the Scarred Lands setting, the gods were seen just a short time ago, when they beatdown the titans. In Greek mythology, the gods were always coming to Earth to play. Heck, in the Forgotten Realms, the gods were there only a short time ago too, although in a much weaker state... In the Greyhawk campaign, they make a point of saying that gods are banned from the world, which implies that such a state is not of the norm.
Maybe an avatar or possessed priest that the god speaks through if you're lucky (or unlucky!).
To make fantasy religions believable, we NEED more nitty-gritty on how to use the religion and its believers in our games... not "my god can beat up your god" stat-blocks that encourage the idea that gods can be killed! Such mortal hubris is a sure prescription for the deities to lay down the smack on arrogant munchkins everywhere!![]()
Frankly, the idea that beating up gods with mortals is munchkin comes from 1st edition where things didn't scale very well. With 3rd edition, if you can keep your character alive long enough, he could theoretically get high enough level to challenge the gods, especially with the ELH coming out. Give a 120th-level character a +5 sword and he could beat up on a lot of the lower-ranking gods.
