Descent into the Depths of the Earth - your experiences?

Quasqueton

First Post
Twelth thread of a series on the old classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure modules. It is interesting to see how everyone's experiences compared and differed.

Descent into the Depths of the Earth and Shrine of the Kuo Toa

Did you Play or DM this adventure (or both, as some did)? What were your experiences? Did you complete it? What were the highlights for your group?

[Note: the associated "Drow" modules will be a seperate thread.]

I used to have the seperate modules.
I ran thru in my munckin mega gaming years. Did not enjoy it.
I dm during the same time. Due to the megagaming players I did not enjoy it.

My favorite adventures along with D3, and the G series. I enjoyed the Shrine of the Kuo-Toa marginally better than the Warrens of the Troglodytes. Mainly because of all the times I've ran these two adventures, no one has "discovered" Asberdies. Talk about ruining the Dm's fun... ;)

the lich was a longstanding BBEG in my campaign. ;)

That "lich in a 30' cavern" was one of the most obsurd concepts I have ever seen in the old modules (and there are many obsurd things in the old stuff). I never played this adventure, but I've always wondered how that encounter would work out. And how the Players would take it.

it is only obsurd if you don't use your imagination.

and if you make everything static.

so too are orcs in a 10 ft room guarding a chest/pie obsurd. but everything needs to poo, sleep, eat, etc...

I agree. I've got no problem with a lich hanging out in a 30 ft. cavern. The adventure gives a (IMO) good reason why he's down there and it's up the DM to flesh it out. Remember, Acererak called a 10 ft. square room in a swamp home....
