DI and other Supplements are not "core" Core

That said, I see the point and agree that I don't have to - unless I just don't want to buy the subscription to begin with. Which I may not. I dislike "core" having the sneaky underlying "official" meaning. Now the moving target is accelerating with online changes that come faster than in print. I guess that I'll wait and see.

It sounds like their definition of "core" is closer to what I (and many others) would call "official." I'm a little bothered by this.
Yup.

Another definition of 'Core', I've often seen is: Everything that's in the SRD. I wouldn't mind if they added new races and classes to the SRD yearly :)

Does that include variant rules in the SRD?

I would agree with you, but for psionics and the variant rules.

I'd prefer to separate "core": PHB, MM, DMG, and "official": WOTC Products.

But that's probably just wishful thinking.

In the old days, Dragon magazine was considered "official" content, but there's no way I would ever call that material core! As far as I'm concerned, D&D Insider, Dragon Online, Gleemax and my friends' websites are just the same.

What's core? The core books three books, and whatever content is added to the new SRD. Frankly, if the PHB2, MM2 and so forth have classes, feats and monsters in 'em that don't show up in the SRD, then they won't be core to me. Just like the "Complete" books weren't core.

I guess I don't get what the issue is: core material is D&D without the splats, that's all.

...at least in my opinion it is.

I've always thought of "core" as meaning "anything in the PHB, MM, and DMG".

Interestingly, the PHB II, DMG II, and MM II though infinity all seemed to fall in that category, at least around my table and this board.

I'm guessing that that's why they're doing the "annual PHB, MM, DMG" plan. Those three titles all sell very well regardless of roman numeral suffix, and all seem to be accepted as part of the "core" game (as opposed to the sometimes iffy viability of whatever you find in a splat book).

Smart move; I support it 100%.

Exactly. "SRD Core" is the term used by some gamers, not WotC's.

Again, I think people are misunderstanding.

I think right now the real "core" (as in what you see in the rulebooks) will be the PHB, DMG, MM. Anything else will be labeled as "supplements" (perhaps the PHB II, DMG II, etc. will be the exception but that's a wait-and-see). For some gamer lingo though in the same way that people are calling wizard/fighter's "gish" (let's not go there, there's another thread devoted to that), some gamer's definition of "core" might include non-setting specific material (in the same way that people say core is what's in the SRD--which is actually material more than the three core books).

As for books referring to the DI, I don't think that's the case. Rather, they're going to do what they've previously done. If they really like a game mechanic/feat/class, they'll reprint it in a future supplement. The same way Arcane Strike popped up in Complete Warrior (albeit with tweaks). They didn't reference see DI #XXX but rather they reprinted the whole thing. So if you see material in the DI and your GM doesn't allow online material, you can buy him the supplement it comes out in. =P

Well, there are blue roses. :p

Actually blue roses have long been seen as impossible. The one in your picture is a rather recent devolopment the product of much genetic engenieering and cloning.

Incomplete cross-book references may sell comic books, but I think in RPG materials they'll cheese folks off something fierce. I really suggest WotC become disciplined about how they use terms like "core".

You got that right, I'm none-too happy about entries in MMIV and MMV having creatures with class levels in optional material from Complete Adventurer, PHBII and (IIRC) The Book of 9 Swords.
