Dice superstitions

Personally, I have no superstitions but one of my players has an interesting one where he feels that the ugglier the die is, the better. He also uses 'time out' boxes and he also has an interesting trait where he yells at dice.

I actually saw him once take the dice out of the room at yell at them.

Did I mention he never has had a girlfriend?

My best friend takes his twenty sided chaos crystal seriously. He acquired it as a gift from our mutual friend in CA many many years ago. He takes the die everywhere, as his belief is that the more often he moves around, the more magnetism the die will aborb from the world. This appears to work, as I have seen that die get him out of very intense situations.

I have a specific full set of dice that I use for when I'm behind the PC sheet. If I lose part of the set I blend it into my larger pool and buy a new set. That's just because I'm OCD, I think. I like a full set.

I have specific d20s that I use when I'm DMing, as well. I have my special "TPK" die that seems to roll inordinately high on a regular basis, which I don't let any of the players have. Actually I don't think it's so much a superstition as a flaw in the die construction that causes it to be weighted to 15. I roll ALOT of 15s with that thing. I don't let players borrow it because, well, I don't want them always rolling 15.

One of my players has a set of dice that he owns, he's still really new to tabletop gaming so its his only set ... the d20 in that set rolls ALOT of 1s and 3s. He almost invariably borrows one of my die about two 1s into each session. Need to save that one for days we play Alternity.

And I like d4s that have the numbers written on the points as opposed to the flats. The numbers are too scrunchy on flats-written die and 4s and 3s seem to have more surface area so on "points" dice more material is taken out making those points lighter and perhaps more likely to land facing upward. ... ... mostly they're just more aesthetically pleasing, though.

In our group we take our dice on and chew on them to make them lucky. Also we frequently refer to karma when talking about good rolls and bad rolls and them balancing out etc.

I'm all twitchy. I have prided myself on NEVER having lost one of my dice (and recently mentioned this in another thread). Well, after seeing this thread and out of boredom, I was pouring all my dice on a table and deciding which ones to "retire" for awhile and which to use....and I'm missing a d6. An old school, High Impact brand ice green. They don't make them anymore. It's irreplaceable. AAAAGGGGHH!!!!!

*retreats to corner and rocks back and forth*

DMC, do you have any pets? I lost a d4 once, but then found it in our living room, where my cat was playing with it!

Everyone is familiar with "dice creep" of course? You're not? Oh.

Well you know how windows eventually end up thicker at the bottom than the top because the glass thanks to gravity creeps down.

Its the same with dice, so they must be stored and while not in use kept with the highest value (or lowest value, in roll low games) on top. So that dice creep will lead to the dice being eventually weighted in favour of the position you leave it standing in.

Its not a superstition as such since if follows sound scientific reasoning. :uhoh:

I place my dice out on the table, seperating them into their various types of dice, with the high number up. I tend to rotate which dice I use, depending upon how the last group I picked up were rolling. Of course, this doesn't help with my d20s. They all hate me. Switching to playing d10 systems has helped me immensely. My d10s like me more.

I also have a dicebag of shame where, once a die goes in, it rarely ever sees the light of day again. I have also previously subscribed to the 'ugly dice roll better cause they want to be loved' mentality. It worked, for a time. Then all of my d20s rebelled.

I am well know at our local tables for h ving horrible dice luck, so I do what I can to try and change that. Also, certain characters seem to have their own luck. My Paladin pretty much never fails a save, but can't roll above a 5 in combat (despite being high level). I've had the horizon walker who could not ever pass a save, but never missed.
