Dice superstitions

I tend to leave my dice with the highest number face up. I also like to have complete sets, and will retire a set if I happen to lose a die.

But, I'm also the "curse-breaker". We had a guy who would roll just fine with his old dice. But, if he rolled someone else's, that person's dice would roll bad for a long time afterwards. However, he was never able to "curse" my dice. So, if he "cursed" someone else's, they were handed to me for me to roll. I would almost always roll the highest number on the next roll of the affected die.

I have a set amount of dice that I use to the exclusion of all other dice. Ive accumulated them by testing out, over a couple of sessions, each individual dice from a friends very extensive collection of die. After I find one I like [such as the pair of d10s that roll 0 more then 50% of the time] I ask if I can have it.

So now I have a free collection of dice that are all undoubtably unbalanced... because they roll the way I want them to. That "Heal check to apply bandage to a shaving cut... I rolled a 17!" is very very true in my case :)

I particularly liked the one character I rolled up that was 18 18 16 15 14 9, using 4d6, drop lowest. :) Too bad it was only for a one shot campaign!

I have to store my dice in a special dice bag - a sock. It doesn't matter what sock, it just needs to be clean, somewhat old, and not too ratty. The first d20 I ever bought has its own miniature sock back, and seems to always roll higher.

For IRC games, there's one guy banned from hosting the dicebot. It's the same algorithm, the same source of random numbers (Hotbits, a webservice that offers random seeds based on the decay of molecules, as close to truly random as you can get), the same server... and when he hosts it, I can't roll anything higher than a 10. Other than his computer hating me, the dicebot doesn't seem to favor anyone. I wish I knew why.

Oh, you don't want to know...

Until recently, I was a fairly sane dice user. I put my d20s 20 side up on the gaming table, talked half-jokingly about karma and Dice Feng Shui, but that was about it. Occasionally, as I usually DM, I would stretch my hand over the dice, held from my body, eyes closed, ala Saruman with the Palantir. But this was just for a bit of humorous/creepy intimidation.

But then came John.

John is a player in the game I recently began playing in. And he is a luck sponge. Don't let him touch your dice, because they will turn up dry. Do not let him near your dice, because your luck will pool off you and onto him.

Eventually he came up with a tactic he calls "aura stealing" and I, with my knowledge of Dark Sun, call defiling. He makes a hollow sucking sound while pointing a cupped hand at the person whose "aura" he's trying to "steal". Call me crazy, but he rolls better after that, and the person he "stole" from rolls worse. Either that's a serious application of positive thinking, or... I don't want to think about the or.

Oh, and the character I have in that game is a warlock. I roll better if he (IC) makes a brief supplication to the Dark Gods before I roll. I'm getting a bit worried.

Demiurge out.

I'm with Bagpuss about 'dice creep'. A friend used to tap his dice with the high number up, so the 'heavy molecules' would sink to the bottom. Pretty hilarious.

(side note: a chem major friend of mine said the glass settling to the bottom of old windows was false, and more of a product of imperfect construction. Anyone knowledgeable able to weigh in on the subject?)

ALL my dice fail me. I buy a new set and they get corrupted immediatly. My dice have also effected the rest of the party as well.

My dice have beaten me, they have won yet they are relentless and I do not know when they will stop.

Example: Playing New Argonauts, grandson of Artemis. I have true shot 1/day. I cast it, the only way I will miss is rolling a 1. You guessed rolled a 1. My last 5 attack rolls added together, 9. Thats with different dice, some not even my own.

I have four d20s in my dice bag, since that's all I'll ever need (until next time I play a high level monk...). I always roll them in order of Blue, Green, Red, Orange.

When I pull my dice out for play, I always put them with the high side face up. Even when we're in combat, I move them back to their rest position.

I also only take out what I might need; my al-Qadim warmage has 12 d6s, 6 d4s and d8s, and 2 d10s and d20s. After all, his caster level's 12, he might have to roll percentile, and his BAB is 8, so no more than two attacks are necessary. Also, with the exception of d20s, no dice are taken out in odd numbers, even if it's unlikely that all will be used. With the exception of this last caveat, this is mostly due to my not wanting to lose any dice.

I have this problem, but only with d6's. I cannot roll d6's for the life of me. Seriously. Any other die I get average (or even above-average) rolls. But with d6's I nearly always roll a 1 or a 2. It's uncanny!

One interesting side effect of this is that my players no longer fear Fireball spells, and are much more willing to jump down very tall heights at low levels.
