Did anyone get a chance to check out D&D Encounters?

No, they provide a number of pregens, but anyone can make a 1st level character. You even get bonus points if you use the Character builder.

i was also curious as to how this went - thanks to those who went and were able to share.

A random thing I did notice -- apperently, WotC was posting twitter updates every hour during the event (Wizards_DnD (Wizards_DnD) on Twitter - you have to scroll down a bit now though...). And if you were playing during the hour that the update was posted, you had some special effect for your game. Looking at their twitter, I see stuff like:

"A putrid stench wafts out of the sewer. Creatures starting their turn in or adjacent to sewer water squares are weakened."

"You’ve prepared your weapons well for battle. For this session, PCs score critical hits with weapon attacks on rolls of 19 or 20.

"Psychic attacks have a cloying hold. PCs that score a critical hit on psychic attacks slow the target (save ends).

"Dozens of waterlogged rats pour out of the sewer. For the session, all creatures grant combat advantage to all others."

so some unexpected variety/turn of events for various groups i'm sure...(presuming someone had access to twitter during the game that is).

By the time our game started, no more updates came out. The party never fell near the stinky water.

The map was about 10 squares wide and 20 squares long, roughly. It was put together using images of dungeon-tiles, making it easy to build your own rather quickly. Like I said above, we used the new 3d tiles to represent the 20' height difference.
