Did anyone watch Scrubs last night?

This is not related to the TV show so it doesn't need to go in the TV forum.

On Scrubs, one of the doctors had his good friend over who brought his child. The doctor's kid and the friends kid, both 2, were playing. Anyway, the doctor realized his friends child might have autism. So he looked after him for a while and determined it was so. He eventually told his friend and helped him.

I watched that and it was so sad because I kept thinking of what I would do if I were told my son, who will be 3 on Sunday, had some defect.

I've noticed that a lot since I became a parent. Anything on TV or in a movie that even remotely deals with family tragedy, or joy, takes on a larger meaning to me. Anyone else notice that?

Yep.

I've even noticed it in my adventure design. I try to think up ways to get the kids out of the picture.

I definitely notice this. News articles that I would casually dismiss before we had my son certainly give me second thought these days. Same with the TV shows too, anything that is family related, kid related dealing with tragedy doesn't seem so superficial now as it did in the childless days.

Absolutely. I watched the episode last night and have been paying attention to NBC's autism coverage (been all over their news programs and websites- and obviously seeped into their entertainment programming). I have a very close friend whose son is autistic and I have a 9-month old son. Everything stands out more when it affects children after you have your own.

This recent tragedy with the expectant mother and her small son who were all killed about made me vommit. :(

Absolutely. I avoid certain news articles I come across during the day because I know they will impact me more than I care to have happen while at work (suddenly developing a very strong urge to leave and see my kids).

It is so true that becoming a parent changes everything. Things that used to seem so important are less so, and things that seemed insignificant suddenly become so much more.

Anyone ever see the e-mail that has all kinds of pictures drawn by kids and the writer of the e-mail "grading" them and ripping each one apart? Before kids I would have laughed my butt off at that e-mail. Now I read it and look at similar art on my cubicle walls from my own kids and see a shallow person who can't appreciate the joy and love those pictures convey.

I usually don't read articles like that on CNN because they make me have the same reaction. :(

Ask Erik Mona sometime how River of Blood was received by Living Greyhawk members. There were a number of people (some of who hadn't even read the scenario) that were up in arms over the premise, I suppose because some Living Greyhawk players might be children themselves.

River of Blood by Erik Mona

The Millstream runs red with the blood of the abducted children of Greyhawk's lower class, triggering memories of a crisis thought averted long ago.

On a lighter note, one of my best friends went to high school with Neil Flynn (the janitor from Scrubs) and we've had occasion to hang out and tip glasses a few times. Funny guy. Nice to see him achieving some success!

Baby swings may trigger dog attack, expert says

Good God! I'm locking my son in his hermetically sealed room! (well, we don't use his swing anymore at least)

Well, at least two of these are by Pit Bulls. I know Pit Bull owners will defend their breed, but I just cannot see having one of these dogs around with a baby. A neighbor at my old apartment had one and that was one of the biggest reasons I did not want to have kids while living there.

It's not just parenting - any story, premise, or event that connects in some way back to our lives we tend to take more notice of. It's why my wife and I get more upset in animal cruelty cases than other people - we're both pet and animal lovers. It's why I pay more attention to stories where the main character shares some of my traits, or when someone's life mirrors my own.

I never heard about Erik's RPGA adventure. I imagine that went over like a lead balloon, poor guy. :(
