Did You Buy the First Three 4e Core Books?

Yep, and an extra PHB. When amazon had the Gift Set for a ridiculously low €30 I even considered to buy a second set, just because, but found little reason for having all the books twice (except the PHB, which I already have twice) in the end. ;)

Nope. For starters I've decided that RPG rule books should cost $25 or less and be all inclusive in a single book instead of 3+. IMHO if you need more than one book, then there are 'too many rules' for the game.

Gift set from Amazon.com.

Too discounted to pass up.
Same here.

When the gift set finally got here, about three months late, I opened the books, skimmed through, and put them back in their slipcase. Since then, the only I use I found for them is to put them under the projector which a friend of mine occasionally brings for movies.

No. I followed the design journals, designer blogs, and other posts by the designers (e.g, Mearls monster design philosophy threads here) and then made two trips to the bookstore to spend time reading the books.

Despite a short list of changes that I liked (most of which I have since adopted or were already similar to houserules in use), the majority of the changes, imo, were terrible and ruined the game rather than improving it.

My next campaign involves awakened forest animals as PCs and requires greenhags and druids. I seldom, if ever, run stock dungeon crawls where core races are the norm.

You should check out Blue Rose and/or True20 by Green Ronin. It's a great system and really flexible. Blue Rose contains rules/stats for awakened animals.

That said I don't see why you couldn't do this in 4e. Druid Rules are coming or variants are available from XPR or Goodman Games. I could knock a homebrew Greenhag together in 10 minutes. The awakened animals would take me a bit longer but not impossible.

That said if your comfortable with 3e why make work for yourself. Personally though if you get the chance check out True20.

Also can I play in your game ;)
