Looks like the Rules Compendium will be good for something after all! Color me surprised! :p

...at least until the FAQ or Sage Advice/Ask Wizards/Customer Supprt goes ahead and contradicts it...

Just to get this clear. A Trip attack can be used on an AoO now, right?

So, Improved Trip feat wielders can now CONTINOUSLY (if they win the opposed roll) trip someone??

1- Trip, win check, free attack on prone opponent.
2- Opponent tries to stand, causes AoO
3- Trip attack on AoO, win check, free attack on prone opponent.
4- etc,etc

Is this correct??

Because.....wow....

No, because an attack of opportunity "interrupts" the normal flow of actions in the round. If an attack of opportunity is provoked, immediately resolve the attack of opportunity, then continue with the next character’s turn (or complete the current turn, if the attack of opportunity was provoked in the midst of a character’s turn).

The prone combatant seeks to stand, the AOO of opportunity is provoked, and an opponent who threatens the combatant can make a single melee attack (or substitute disarm, grapple, trip, or supposedly now sunder). Opponent elects to attempt a trip, but what is the combatant's status? They are still prone - and you can't trip a prone person. So the tripper gets an AOO when the trippee stands, but they can't prevent them from completing the action.

That hasn't changed. It's only Sunder that's changed. Check your PHB - Trip carries footnote 7 on Table 8-2.

So, it IS possible to do this!

No - read Legildur's response.

At the time the AoO is provoked, the opponent is still prone... so you can't trip him. You can hit him... but if he's still conscious, once your AoO is over, he completes the action he took to provoke that AoO - namely, standing from prone.

QFT.

Of course, if your character has Combat Reflexes and the opponent does something provoking a second AoO after standing back up, then you can trip again.

It's why using the stand-from-prone AoO to Disarm can be fun - if he picks his weapon up, he provokes again and you can trip him...
