Disarm, why so easy?

Artoomis, the fact that the rules say nothign about alternate means of keeping material components (including making no mention of excluding them) says to me that you're exactly right: you can do it in any way the DM allows without violating the rules. Indeed, a DM that required a spell component pouch and did not offer the option of tracking components individually would, I think, be violating the rules.

Daniel
On the other hand, a DM could, quite validly, rule that using a spell component pouch is the only way to retrieve spell components quickly and easily, as part of the action of casting the spell. If they're stored in ordinary pockets and pouches, they might well require using the "retrieve a stored item" action to bring them to hand, a move action that provokes AoOs.

As a side note, here's an analysis of the pictures with regard to a spell component pouch or holy symbol:
Page 27, Gimble(Bard)-Appears to have no spell component pouch at all
Page 31, Jozan(Cleric)-Has one small pouch that may be a spell component pouch, but has at least 3 holy symbols
Page 34, Vadania(Druid)-Has one rather large pouch behind her, but it doesn't seem to be a spell component pouch
Page 43, Alhandra(Paladin)-Doesn't seem to have a spell component pouch, but does have a holy symbol either tattoed on her left forearm or a flesh-colored bracer with a holy symbol
Page 46, Soveliss(Ranger)-Again, doesn't appear to have a spell component pouch, although he does have myriad bags around his body and under the cloak
Page 51, Hennet(Sorcerer)-Has one pouch that may be a spell component pouch...But then again, he has clothes that appear to be made out of belts.
Page 56, Mialee(Wizard)-As discussed, loads of pouches.
Page 57, Nebin(Illusionist)-At least 8 different pouches, and one can assume they continue all the way around his cloak.

Thanks for the better anaylsis (better eyes than mine).

As we can see, no conlusions can be made based upon the illustrations in the PHB.

This topic rules. Wizards need to stay out of melee, or they'll be either disarmed, grappled, killed by big pointy objects, or humiliated and have their underwear pulled over their heads.

Wizards need a pouch, and trying to pull a spider out of your left buttocks pocket which has a closed flap is a BAD IDEA in melee, or even when not in melee, because its not "handy". No need to cite sources, I'm in the rules forum using real world logic! Wheeee!

Wizards SHOULD have pockets EVERYWHERE because they look COOL.

We should all capitalize every few words, it makes things look nicer.

In your way, then, a character could more easily qualify for the Vow of Poverty since they do not need to have a "spell component pouch."
VoP characters are allowed a spell compnent pouch.

glass.

That's a simple case of over-accessorizing. It's a fact: if you want your minions to take you seriously, you can't come into the stronghold every morning looking like an evil Christmas tree. They snicker, you destroy them, and replacing those mooks runs into money.
from the first page... just had to re-post it...
