If I was the DM, I'd retcon the spell book into having been there the whole time, I wouldn't let lack of foresight be an obatacle. If the player insisted on not having a spellbook, and didn't want to retcon... well, he could always fill all his spell slots with read magic. Since I don't mind him getting it yesterday, I guess I can't kick about getting it at the first reasonable opportunity. I much prefer the "you've been studying this for some time" aproach, though.
