Discworld's Headed For A Million Dollars!

Terry Pratchett's Discworld RPG: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork--say that 3 times quickly!

Launched on Kickstarter just a few hours ago, and already over half a million dollars, Terry Pratchett's Discworld RPG: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork (now that's a mouthful!) looks certain be be the next million-dollar TTRPG Kickstarter.

For £50 you can pick up the core rulebook and dice, or for £100 the full set for gamemasters (with cheaper PDF equivalents, of course).

The game is powered by Modiphius's brand new Narrativium system, which is a rules-lite narrative game system based around telling silly stories; it doesn't feature combat rules, choosing to place the emphasis on storytelling rather than mechanics.

As with most million-dollar Kickstarters, there's a ton of fun add-ons--dice, collector's editions, an adventure book, a dice tray, and more.

You can also watch a livestream of the game being played or grab the official quickstart for free.

Just watched the actual play premiere with Quinn, and while the players were certainly part of the appeal, the characters themselves had plenty of interesting traits to play off of. Could even run this using Aspect only Fate, or Amber style secret bidding. Not my favorite system by any measure, but it's hard to hate it when there's so little to it.

Wish they had a system neutral world book.
The system is so non-existent that it's already essentially that.

I can't imagine Disc World as a functional RPG setting,
I find this outright baffling, as it's essentially a standard fantasy setting, and comedy is actually quite formulaic once you break it down. So I'm really curious as to what sort of tonal advice will be present in the core.

Penguin publishing has a really nice article about why Terry's writing is so appealing. It absolutely is funny, but it's not just comedy. His setting is far more satirical than standard fantasy and, if you read the article, people see more depth in it than simple comedy would define.

You could just run it as pure comedy, and have a lot of fun, sure. But for me it wouldn't feel like Discworld. The same way Lord of the Rings can be run as a standard fantasy, but having wizards throwing fireballs and casting haste wouldn't feel like a Tolkien world.

And just to be really clear, I don't want this to be seen as a "better" way to play. If you are having fun running a pure comedy game using the trappings of Discworld, fantastic. It is just that my personal preference would be just to do that style of game in a generic world (I have done so in the very well-conceived world URESIA) and only run in Discworld if I felt I could at least mimic poorly what Terry did to make it special.

I like how they're handling the retail aspect of the product, also:

"The books and accessories in this Kickstarter are exclusive to the backers of this project, and a different - designed for retail - offering will be available for retailers after this project is fulfilled, including a digest rulebook and starter set. Therefore, we are not offering retail pledges for these products. If you are a retailer and would like to hear about the retail products for Discworld: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork, please email sales@modiphius.com"

Indeed. Yet for some reason folks are never as concerned with conveying the satire, and I hope the game contains a usable thesis on how to implement that as well.
