Disintegrate vs Summon 6

Those Summon spells are decent (I think) if you consider their other abilities. You can use a Summon spell that can be the bane of the creature you are fighting, or use one as a mount if you're out of Fly spells.

I do think that they should expand the Summon Monster lists, though.

How about some more suggestions on using Summon Monster 6?

Seems some people use it in many different ways...

Also a Prot from Evil/Good can be passed thru with Spell Resistance ? I suppose so... that make the Celeestial Dire Bear even more impressive... too impressive.

So far, I didn't use summon spells a lot.

Sometimes for combat (but never below Summon Monster VII, because it really only becomes worthwhile, if multiple creatures can be summoned, and the Celestial Dire Bear is the first really good combat creature there), sometimes for healing (herds of Unicorns and later Ghaele Eladrin) and once for carrying (for a teleport) an evil artifact our good aligned characters didn't want to touch without further scrutinying (Fiendish Gorilla).

Summoned monsters can also be used as distractions or baits or, if you feel nasty, to trigger traps.

Then check out the last issue of Dragon Magazine. They listed quite a few new monsters as well as guidelines for expanding them yourself.

edit- That would be the December '02, Issue 302 of Dragon Mag

Take the guidelines with a grain of salt. They amount to "anything with a CR of range X can be put into the list for that Summon Monster Y." I'm sorry, but Death Slaad are a bit too good to be in the Summon Monster IX list...

Um, hell. I'm trying to reconstruct their system from memory -- their guidelines don't even conform with what's already in the list, now that I'm doing CR comparisons. Oh well.

In those guidelines they specifically state that you should evaluate each specific monster. Also, they mention allowing casters access to only a limited number of creatures.

I'm not too sure that Death Slaadi are too powerful to allow. If they are though, it is because of their spell-like abilities, which are specifically mentioned as being warning signs that a creature may be too powerful.

Of course, unless you house-rule Gate, then the Summon Monster IX creature list is probably not going to come into play anyway. :)

I believe the current lists take spell-casting and spell-like abilities into account.
