DM for hire

First Post
So I was thinking the other day, now that I've graduated from post secondary school with a B. Sc. that I should probably get a job. I'm working right now but I don't love the job and it's not something that I want to do as a career.

Upon asking my friends for their advice, the majority expressed the same view. Do what you love.

I like science but I'm not sure I love it. I thought and thought about it and aside from sports (I will never be a professional athlete), I like reading and playing d&d. I do some freelance writing here and there but nothing stable.

The answer became clear to me. I should be a professional DM. Sure, playing is fun too but no one is going to pay me to play in their campaign (If anyone IS going to pay me, please feel free to contact me).

There's got to be a market out there for professional Dungeon Masters right? I have extensive knowledge of 3rd edition and I've memorized the rules to the letter. I am a herald level GM by the RPGA and I've run many adventures with diverse groups of people. I can be as serious or as laid back as you want and I guarantee an enjoyable gaming experience.

To those guys out there who want to play but don't have an experienced DM or those who would rather play than DM for your group, I'm your man. I charge a flat rate and provide my own transportation. I can run custom campaigns or DM your modules or even adapt to your ongoing storylines. I write adventures and plan sessions on my own time and charge only for session time.

Want a couple hours a week of hassle free game time? Want someone else to take care of all the nitty gritty details so you can really enjoy the game? Send me a message.

Disclaimer: This post is meant in part to be humourous. Feel free to comment :)

p.s. If you actually want to hire my services, I am available most nights at an affordable rate.

There was actually one poster here who got hired to DM a campaign for some guys. If you did a bit of searching around on the boards you could probably find the thread somewhere.

Instead of paying a DM for their work, I do reward my DMs after the fact for a job well done. I will give them RPG books and dice, and one year one guy got a case of minis.

I don't see why not, always a shortage of DMs, its a complex, rare skillset etc. :)

I have a pal, who, quite seriously, if he ever wins the Lottery, wants to pay me to be his personal DM :D

personally I get furious at players how don't appreciate a good DM's effort, grr.

DMing is damn complex, not physically troubling, unless player's except you to carry stuff to their house (get the damned splat books yerselves, lazy buggers! Metal minis + core books + monster books = heavy! lol).
I'm ill so now i won't carry much (hurray for plastic minis!), and DMing itself is stressful as heck unless everything is optimal.

People need to appreciate a good DM!

look, for all the 4th ed complaints about being like a MMORPG, a point was missed....the DM, and good players are creative actors, directors and producers. I bet, 300 years form now, folk will be playing advanced MMORPGS, which will be living story lines, be it D&D, fantasy, dramas...who knows.
Why the heck would you want to watch crap like a soap opera, compared to making your own story and world?

D&D was the first true "computer game"! Plot...flow chart...Role play...traps...treasure...

300 years form now, a "DM", whatever it maybe called, will be the "#1 hit music entertainer of the week". I'm not being facetious, I'm deadly serious.
Soft/hardware will have evolved so far, that your sketches will be made into 3d creations, with touch/smell/taste feedback, your NPCs given autonomous life.

Simple evidence of this is the STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl game. it has 20,000 NPCs with basic "life" programming, to hunt, barter etc...300 years from now, NPCs will work off the mind set you build for them, living, killing, gaining xp/treasure, etc.

Imagine the Temple of ELemental Evil, where Lareth works away at his goals while you are not there or hires entirely different "muscle"...Hommlet get's it's castle built...the Temples recruit more creatures longer you are away from the game not interfering with them...etc

Another point of this is that game companies cannot supply enough content to feed the needs of so many devoted gamers, it's impossible. See Dungeons and Dragons Online and why it sucked...simply not enough content...only the FANS themselves can ever create enough content. Smart folk in the business, know that.

Scary, eh? ;)
And no, I neither liek Star Trek Next Generation, or The Matrix, lol!
I'm coming from Syndicate and Syndicate Wars (Computer games, long before The Matrix, Syndicate had a much better and scarier idea for a vast neural net), and a scifi novel called "Starhammer", for this viewpoint, from years ago, and each day that goes by, it gets more likely....

So, luv yer DM, or one day, he may demand pay! Muhaha:p

You're my hero. I painstakingly create adventures, run the campaign, do all the prep work, deal with complaints and discrepancies between players, create custom prestige classes and create playing grids on top of paying for rulebooks, dice, modules and miniatures and my players have never done anything nice for me.

Don't get me wrong, it's a labour of love and I don't expect anything for my work. Being DM is hard work and while I do enjoy it, I think it's time some people paid for the convenience of having a dedicated, creative and hardworking DM.

I remember seeing someone talk about running for pay just in the last week or so, talking about running a game at a rec center. I recall one of the kids could only come up with the name Eminem, and a couple others just wanted to act like gangers. For some reason I want to say it was Teflon Billy, but I'm not sure. My Google-fu seems to be weak tonight, and my community supporter account has expired. :(

Heh, good luck with that one! Don't put a down payment on a house or car or anything . . . in fact you might want to stock up on ramen noodles . . . .

The one I'm thinking of actually got hired by a couple of guys that run a company. I'm talking guys that are 30+. It certainly wasn't someone charging kids playing in a rec centre.

Tell me about it. I also have a girl that I want to ask to marry me. I don't think she'll find the humour in me telling her "It's a ring of 'Invisibility'".
