DM for hire

I've been paid to DM.

Specifically, I was paid to teach DnD at an academic summer camp. I taught 4 classes of 6-12 students 5 days a week for 3 weeks. It was a blast and I earned 3 grand doing it. And I got to deduct 3rd edition purchases. Sadly, my schedule changed and I couldn't do it any more, but...

I remember seeing someone talk about running for pay just in the last week or so, talking about running a game at a rec center. I recall one of the kids could only come up with the name Eminem, and a couple others just wanted to act like gangers. For some reason I want to say it was Teflon Billy, but I'm not sure. My Google-fu seems to be weak tonight, and my community supporter account has expired. :(
Yep, it was Teflon Billy. Unless I'm mixing up his post with another, he also had to deal with kids who thought it was the height of hilarity to fart on the monsters. And I think "Eminem" was the best character name in the bunch.

I don't see why not, always a shortage of DMs, its a complex, rare skillset etc. :)

I have a pal, who, quite seriously, if he ever wins the Lottery, wants to pay me to be his personal DM :D

I have a friend who said the same thing. Plus the idea of a gamers compound came up. Sort of like a hippie retreat but with showers :)

I was hired by a wealthy family in La Jolla, CA last year to DM for about 6 kids (10-17 yrs of age), $100 a session (and these were 7-10 hr sessions). The parents had gamed when they were younger and sat in for a few games. It was really frakin' awesome, actually. They would cook us all dinner and serve me wine and beer.

Unfortunately, I was in grad school at the time and simply became too busy to handle the prep. I had to quit, even though they loved me.

I really kind of miss it.

I wonder how much Terry Goodkind, George R.R. Martin or the late David Gemmel would charge per hour for D&D sessions.
You enjoy being rail-roaded? By a dude who will CUT OFF YOUR PC's RIGHT HAND just for story reasons?

No thanks. It's fun to read about character suffering, not to play them.

There's usually some degree of railroading going on with d&d. I don't think there's any reason to think that these authors would do it any more than any other DM.

Also, has your DM never cut off an essential body part? Making my PCs suffer is an essential part of the game!
