DM Hazing

I put the PCs through hell as is.

If someone tempts me, I'll gladly provide them with an experience they won't forget soon.

Besides, not being particularly plot-focused, it's not really possible to mess with me.
I also have practically no scruples about content any more. I won't even flinch if you start randomly slaughtering everyone you meet. (I've seen worse, ya know.) Turnabout is fair play, though - and I'm much better at horror (subtle, splatter, or whatever, really) than most players.

I probably wouldn't game again with someone like that, though. If I can't trust a player, I have no use for them.

Wow it sounds like noone has the moral high ground in this one but I'm amazed at the players in game reaction and the GM not squishing it like a bug. However that gets into GM vs. player games and I've never been able to wrap my brain around those. Sounds like the fact that you weren't killed outright when your good characters brought down demons makes me think your Gm was more decent than you lot deseved.

Or was reading a book behind his screen just saying, "yup," and, "okay," every once in a while. ;)

Maybe instead of FORCING the DM to run your style of game, you should try finding a DM who WANTS to run your style of game.

If my players behaved this way, I too would find new players.

Also, it seems there is just a bias against "modules" here. Maybe your DM has work or family commitments that don't allow him the time to write adventures from scratch and if he is a relative n00b, then maybe he isn't comfortable winging it.

The game died in a matter of minutes.

Any other groups out there that came up with in-game ways to deal with railroading/booring game syndrome/DM powertrip/crappy description/etc. whether they worked or not?

I am sure you did not intend to come off as nagatively as perhaps you did in this post, but wow - you guys are a menace.

On a forum dominated by DMs, you'll find sympathy in fairly short supply for this attitude.

i find Alcohol works best. make a game of it.

one shot of Crown Royal for every bad call or action by the DM or the NPCs. that way after the night at least you have a new dice bag.

Heh heh. Speaking as my groups eternal DM, I condemn your actions. Speaking as a player... I can sympathize...

I THOUGHT about mutiny a few times, at the hands of bad DMs, but ultimately never followed through. You guys aren't playing nice...

I'd find new players. Life is too short to deal with jerks. If a player thought they could do better, then they should run it. Better hope that group does not plan on hazing him though!

I have seen a group do this once to a first time GM. They made completely broken characters using their greater knowledge of the rules and ruined her game. I do not even know why she games any more!

I would say more on the subject, but I do not want to offend Eric's grandma.

I do remember one heck of a funny story on these forums about a group whose DM wouldn't let any of the PCs die, to the point that the whole party was fed up with it, so the players kept putting their PCs in mortal danger to see how far he'd go. In the end, they set a boat on fire to burn to death, and the DM said, "the boat sinks, putting out the fire" at which point they jumped up and cheered, "THEN WE DROWN!"

In my group, friendly ribbing of a new DM has happened before, but nothing as drastic as VoiceofReason's story. If we have that much problem with what the DM is offering, we just stop playing and try something different - or another person will DM for a while. If it's a new DM, we let them try what they want to, because if they don't make all the classic "new DM" mistakes, then they likely won't grow. If it's someone who's been DM for a while, who came up with the lame idea, then we express our lack of interest in the game, and either the DM revises his ideas, or we try something different.
