D&D 5E DMG: hard rules or just DM advice?

Don't get me wrong. Outside the one campaign, I hardly stick to RAW nearly as much. That said, I find odd bits and pieces from the DMG to be fun. Things like their renown system for my homebrew merchant and adventuring guilds or characters interacting with magic item buyers when they don't have any use for a magic item they have. Of course, I'm no longer rolling on tables for characters and whatnot but the guidelines are actually quite useful for having something of a structure in what I place rather than aimless throwing thoughts on a paper.
