DMs - Do you ask for your players character sheets?

I always keep the sheets after each game session. That way I know they won't be forgotten and I can look over the sheets to create suitable challeneges and encounters based on the strengths and weaknesses of the party.

I keep the sheets between sessions. The major reason for this is that I can keep the sheets together, both with each other, and also with the other required books, to ensure they get to the game safely.

However, I also keep up-to-date electronic copies of the sheets, and only I have Acrobat for updating the forms. Each time the group levels, I print new copies for each player.

When they level, I do check the sheets for errors, not because of cheating, but rather because I know the rules better then most of my players. It's rare to see a level go by when one or more players don't make a mistake, usually in the form of spending too few skill points, or exceeding the maximum skill rank for their level.

I know which of my players need help with their sheets, mostly because they are new to the game, so I help the make the character in the first place and ensure it is correct so I don't have to look at it so much later. I also help those players with levelling so they get it right and learn how to do it. I do however, ask for everybodies character sheet at least once: to copy down their stats and whatnot, and I do have to update everytime they level, but I figure it's easier for me as a DM to know how much the PCs can handle, and not have to ask for their skills and saves when something covert is happening.

Yes.

Because players cheat.

They always cheat.

Hmmmm.... Sheet Cheet Sheet Cheet Hmmmmm.....;)

My DM takes them.

About this forgotting thing, once the paladin forgot his sheet, i forgot the dice, and i left the adventure at home.:p

On a regular basis? No.

At character creation I always look them over though. My current campaign I had a bad experieince with a player that showed up on the first night with his PC on loose leaf and not typed up yet. I flipped through, but because he was late, I didn't really stop and look, just saw that all the relevent parts were there.

It wasn't until about a month into the campaign I found out he had "illegal" stat's (as in starting with 20's for a human). But since we were already so far into the campaign he didn't want to change them since he'd already been playing with them and they were in his relevant spell casting attribute. (sigh) I was ticxked because he new the were outr of wack and looked at it as he got one by. He also could never seem to read through the whole spell description and read all the relevent parts. Only the ones that helped him.

One night after everbody left I was so steamed because I new he wasn't doing things right I asked everbody to send me their sheats so I could "brainstorm." I found some mistakes on a couple of folks sheats, wrong AC's, a wrong BAB that sort of thing. His had feats on it that weren't even allowed. he was taking feats from the PHB instead of from the Arcana Evolved book which is what we were playing. At this point, I called him on that, and started reading every single spell he cast before I let it go off. He was mad about me looking over his shoulder but he couldn't even get how the feats he had worked right either. Some people just shouldn't bother with playing a spell caster. They can't wrap their minds around how the class works, he's one of them.

Nice guy normally, but I felt so used and abused by him that I was seriously considering stepping down as the DM. I didn't need the stress of dealing with that every Friday. His PC was dumped by the group though after some abuse he gave them, so now he's playing a fighter and doing much better at it.

Don't let a bad player stop you from being a DM. Believe me, I understand the inclination. Better that you make it clear you won't be walked on and have him either stop or leave. No in between. Stepping down hurts you, and the other players, far more than it hurts him.

Though sometimes it's really tempting to give it up.

I like to have them to a) reference during adventure creation, and b) make sure they get to the game. I'll note errors if I see them, but I don't study them.

Cheers
Nell.

That's the way I am. I like to keep on top of things, but Im not a narc either. Besides, if you have their sheets, then when they show up without you dont have to panic.

I never used to... then I had this "new" guy
He added his Dexterity to armour and his DEX bonus! (yep, 15 and +2)
His STR bonus and Strength to hit and damage.
Added INT bonus and Intelligence to skills.
I had a laugh and weird cry at the sheet as I fixed it and tried to acertain what he meant on it.

Then he didn't turn up, was off getting "busy" with some girls from a coffee shop.
The best thing though is he was from Bendigo or Ballarat, so I wonder if MerricB knows him. Red hair, about 5'9"...
Anyway, since then I check over sheets.

In the GURPS game I play we get checked every couple of weeks to ensure things are fine, and the GM always knows what you're doing/headed for.

Every few levels or spots in the game where I know we might be off for a few weeks I will collect sheets. I usually tell everyone in a week or so in advance so they can get their sheet in order. I make no illusions about my intentions - I'm checking for errors. Most of the players in my group right now were new to 3ed when we started and I'm keep telling them accurate book keeping is very important as everyone gets higher in level.

I work completely ad hoc on this front. I have no policy. I try to develop a good procedural/social excuse if I have a player who I think might be screwing up their sheet and they aren't already storing it at my house anyway.
