D&D 5E Dnd's Most Deadly Spell - MAGIC MISSILE!

With a lot of recent threads about worldbuilding and the effects of magic, I thought it would be fun to talk about the most deadly spell in all of dnd.... magic missle.

Now when players think of deadly spells, they often think of fireball, or power word kill, or something like that. And sure when you are thinking about high level characters and monsters, magic missile's damage just doesn't cut the mustard.

But consider your standard citizen of the world, with probably 4 hitpoints to their name. We have this spell that targets you from 40 yards away and WILL HIT YOU. You can't dodge it, you can't put armor on to stop it, you can't hide behind a table, you can't tough it out. If the wizard gets even a sliver of sight on you....you are dead. It takes only 8 damage to kill such a commoner outright (and there is only a 6% chance of rolling lower than that on 3d4+3, basically a nat 20 roll), and in that rare instance you are still unconscious and bleeding out. Lets also not forget the portability. For example a wizard peeks through a key hole and sees a target....boom dead. Cover doesn't matter to magic missile, if I can see you, and there is even a small hole to allow something through....the missiles do their dark work.

That is already super impressive...but what's moreso is....the wizard has this AT 1st level. A wizard just back from the academy....is given one of the most deadly weapons on the planet. They can kill almost anyone with a few words and a wave of their hand, and there is almost no defense against it. And they get 3 bullets in that gun every day.

There is a reason that wizard's are given such hushed respect, and its not fireball. Its the gun of inevitable death, magic missile.

<old geezer voice>"Bah. In my day, ya just got one missile. Maybe it did 1d6+1; maybe it was 1d4+1. I guess they musta got a bit weaker the more Advanced ya were. But at least ya still didn't have to roll to hit! Eh… unless ol' Doc Holmes was watchin'. Then even yer magic missile could miss, dagnabbit.</old geezer voice>

It has numbers on its side. The amount of low-level mages that killed a goblin with one of these is way more than higher level mages that can cast power-word kill or fireball. Of course, fireball can kill multiple goblins, so there is that. With the advent of cantrips and 5e, I may argue that it is fire bolt or eldritch blast.

The real argument is if the 10ft pole saved more lives than a healing potion.

This is also not considering/taking note that, depending on how you view Magic Missile, the spell is also hella deadly when it comes to double/triple/quad tapping a fool when they are trying to make death saves.
Most multi-beam/bolt/ray spells will do that well (if they hit) but a single casting of magic missile is one that won’t; it specifies that the bolts strike simultaneously. Assuming multiple bolts directed to the target, no single bolt in the volley drops the target to 0 hp. Either none do, or all do.

If they’re already down, you may as well send only one bolt. Unless you think you can instant-kill them by dealing damage equal to their max hp.

Here’s a fun alternative: dig a quick grave with mold earth and chuck them in it. Doesn’t even cost a spell slot.

Indeed. As I recall there was an official ruling that each missile counts separately for purposes of forcing the target to make concentration checks, so presumably if you hit a downed target with them, each missile causes a failed death save.
