Do grognards have to be jerks?

I (and many others) would argue that the wild overreaction of "fans" (the word here used very loosely) to the marketing in question is just as responsible, if not moreso (since about thirty seconds of actual thought regarding the marketing in question made it clear that it wasn't out to insult anyone). I absolutely blame the anti-4e crowd for the out-of-control state the edition wars reached - there's only one edition being warred against, and only one group on the march. The rest is a behind-the-gates defense.

Thankfully, we're mostly done arguing over editions. Now all we have to argue over is who's to blame for the damage that's been done.

Those poor besieged 4E fans having to defend themselves from the mean old older edition fans. It is really quite sad and so one sided.

Oh, thankfully those days are over...mostly. There's still the occasional flare-up (see: this week's Neverwinter Campaign Setting press release "scandal"), but I think for the most part the anti-4e crowd has gotten bored and given up.

Yes, this is a problem that nerd-dom of all stripes has to deal with.

Pfeh. You need to spend more time on politics sites and reviewing Talkback sections on newspapers for any articles on crime, politics, or sexuality. Edition wars are a freakin' walk in the park.

Actually the so called anti-4e crowd has a fully supported game now, so there is no reason to decry about WOTC.

Which is why I ultimately don't think 'edition wars' are a big deal. Simply a nice little diversion from real problems.

It's hard to see this as anything more than a shameful attempt at covering the ass of a segment of the community that refuses to take any responsibility for the tremendous damage that they've caused. You can blame WotC all day long, but they already have that responsibility - if they had a hand in fracturing the community, they've paid for it in lost customers. The hate-filled members of the community who want nothing more than to see a game they don't enjoy burn? No skin off their backs; they just buy Pathfinder now instead.

What damage are you talking about? The gaming industry is not hurt by the edition war. The only people that got hurt in the edition war was WOTC, and that was their doing. The business WOTC could be doing with people has gone to otehr companies. I fail to see any damage that was done. Gaming is probably stronger now than ever.

IT's obvious you blame the anti 4e crowd. No one doubted that. Your view is just skewed is all and quite a bit unreasonable.

The fact you do not notice that PAthfinder is equally attacked is proof of your skewed view.

Right which is why your stance that there is more hate on the grognard's side is just plain silly.

There is no other word for it.

The fact that you believe Pathfinder or Paizo is equally attacked is proof of yours.

Just because all segments of nerd-dom have to deal with it does not mean that all do so to the same degree. In fact, the belief that it is uniform throughout the entire land of nerd is a little ridiculous.

Yes, I would have thought that having their cake and eating it too would stop them from complaining that someone else's cake is a cheesecake and boy do they hate cheesecake, but apparently it hasn't.
