Yes, though I don't do any of that myself. The fact that it shows up at Gen Con every year- and that I've known many people in the hobby who did do it- is more than enough for me to consider it part of the hobby.
 

I collect some minis. I enjoy painting them, though I am only mediocre at it, especially compared to some of the truly amazing painters I have met.

Having said this, the minis are, for the most part, a holdover from my wargaming days.

Minis are utterly unnecessary for rpgs.
 



Using prepainted minis is fine, too, but I do really enjoy spending a lot of time painting minis - especially if they're minis I can plan to use in an upcoming adventure.

I read in one of the Ptolus journals that Monte Cook apparently paints minis as armed for his games - e.g. if he's going to have 5 gnolls armed with flails in the game, he finds gnoll minis, arms them with flails and paints them as such. Talk about dedication...
 



No, absolutely not. I hate painting, no matter what, and I don't participate in gambling like CCGs or WotC minis. As I'm not that hot on minis in the first place, this saves me lots of money.
