I'm running current 5E and Castles and Crusades with some over lap in the players.

None played TSR D&D when it was current. Generally I find players like 2E and C&C. Variants of basic are a bit to sparse as level 1&2 are lacking a bit. They'll play ACKs for example Basic fantasy not so much.

Hence why I haven't grabbed OSE.

Some sort of 2E and B/X blend would be my happy spot with modern mechanics eg unified ability scores vs AD&D.

Been a while, but Ive played Beyond the Wall a lot a few years back.

Im very interested in running a Shadowdark or OSE game, but my players prefer the options of 5e, even though they cant seem to remember, understand and use their PCs features.

Such a good game.

Shadowdark is a really good OSR entry point for 5E players, since it's effectively stripped-down 5E. I would offer it up as a one-shot the next time a portion of your players can't show up for a regular game.

I want to add: I belong to a Discord server where I'm tied for "the old guy" status, and everyone is younger to significantly younger, and there's a strong bias against 5e among that segment of younger players.

They're not on ENWorld, but there definitely is a younger player subset who are not at all interested in 5e D&D.
This matches with what I've seen online and amongst some friends who are somewhat new to DnD. Many who started in 5e have started to look at the older editions/retro clones ans some get really into them. It might be more a case of wanting to try out different rpgs and older osr makes for an easy transition.

I run BX and an unholy mashup of AD&D and BX (with bits stolen from other editions) as my main games, with Mork Borg as a palate cleanser from time to time. I am also a player in a 5e game.

(I would also love to run the Black Sword Hack but none of my players even know who this Eric of Marylebone is...)

I played BECMI, 1e, and 2e all when they were current and I currently play 5e, but I don't play any of the OSR D&D-alikes. I really have no desire to play older edition/or OSR games (unless it was a one-off and only with select people).

D&D 2e was my intro to gaming beyond having the Red Box set but never really having anyone to play that with.

Today, it’s 5e plus 2e, DCC, and Forbidden Lands and thinking about running OSE or Shadowdark.
