I find that it can be hard to judge the power of a class on paper alone without playtesting it. Case in point: Monk. Does it look powerful? Yup. Is it actually? Waiting to see it in action to make final judgement.

No, I don't think it's overly powerful. I refuse to make the same mistake I made with the monk 3 years ago!

A Wiz15 can cast polymorph any object, horrid wilting, and trap the soul; a Clr15 can cast mass heal and harm many times a day, and can turn undead; a Wiz3/Clr3/Mystic Theurge9 is limited to disintigrate and heal, has fewer feats than the wizard, and doesn't wear armor like the cleric.

I'm slightly biased because I really liked that PrC Monte Cook released in the Book of Hallowed Might, the Blessed Mage or something like that. However, in hindsight, it isn't that bad, since (comparing it to Monte's PrC), it has a wider spell range but no other special powers, so this new PrC seems about right.

My only concern is that Mystic Theurges seem balanced when compared to equal level cleric, but I just don't see enough downsides on it compared to the wizard of equal level. Of course, maybe that's just some kind of Prestige Class Illusion, since straight clerics and wizards seem comparable on their own, and I'm just missing something else that a straight wizard gets and a Mystic Theurge doesn't.

Finally ! Finally a class that allows to make multiclassed spellcasters that aren't utterly lame !

I would have maybe removed one or two "+1 spellcasting levels" from the thing, but I'm fine with it. Yes, it's more powerful than other cleric/wizard multiclassing options... But cleric/wizard multiclassing is so much weaker than, say, barbarian/fighter multiclassing it's painful. I wouldn't object to it IMC, and if, after playtesting, they prove worrisome, I would restrict them to have one of their class be a limited spellcaster (bard, ranger, paladin, sohei, assassin, blackguard, etc.).

I also think I may generalize it so as it gives +1 level in two spellcasting classes -- any two -- so that it could allow wizard/sorcerer or psion/druid, etc. (Yes, psionics are magic IMC.)

Familiar ability progression ? Bonus feats ? Then you'll use sorcerer instead of wizard, but I have good hopes sorcerers now have Use Magic Device as a class skill. This class don't.

The mystic theurge is very well balanced. Were I hiring d20 designers, one of the questions I'd ask them would be to explain to me if this PrC is balanced with an explanation for their answer. It's a great way to determine if someone understands the fundamental questions of balance and the CR system.

I think the versitility will be quite good, which may offset some of the problems later on, I'd expect it to fall flat on its arse in epic levels. Still, you'd have to play it for a better idea of what theyre capable of and the choice of diety would factor heavily I think.

Apart from that, my only complaint is that it is so damn boring, a bit of flavour in a PrC is what I find most appealing.
