Do you like D&D or do you like RPGs?

We (wife and friends and I) love RPG's.

D&D is our least favorite, in fact.

Hero (any genre) is our favorite and most played, but we like other stuff also occasionally (currently Deadlands).

I believe I rather like RPGs.

Ask me three years ago and I probably would have said D&D only, but that was before my husband wanted to run a Shadowrun game, one group I was in experiment with Savage Worlds (both fantasy and Necessary Evils [supervillains]) and Dresden Files. Then Numenera came along earlier this year, and it was exactly the sort of RPG I want to GM (the style of the game encourages a GMing style identical the way I usually play, which mechanics to support).

Having now experienced other RPGs, I can more easily separate the RPG experience from D&D, which was my first and only formal foray into the genre for the better part of 12 years.

Now, when contemplating the next campaign after the 3.5 D&D one I'm running now, I want to branch out a little more. The only constraint is the pocketbooks of my players. Everyone prefers to have their own copies of the books so we don't keep having to steal it from each other when we're looking up information, and out of the six in my group, three are under tight budget restraints. It's a wee bit of a pickle for trying new things.

Hmm.

I like DnD; particularly older editions, and is usually what I end up playing.

Gotta say, like all RPGs though. I'll try anything once; though some don't get tried again.

If you like wargames or computer RPGs, then I think you would prefer D&D.
If not, there may be other games to your taste also called RPGs.

What about yourself and your group?
I'm generally a D&D-only guy, but I'm not as stubborn about it as some of your group has been. All I need to hear is "I'm running game X" from a friend, and I'll give it a try. So far this hasn't happened very often; I've only tried the sci-fi rpg Blue Planet, Vamp the Masq, d20 Star Wars, and d20 Modern.

So far I haven't enjoyed any of them as much as D&D, but I don't rule out the possibility of a game I'd like more than D&D.

I've never seen a game presented via the medium of a cartoon. What was it?

There are several RPGs that do this now!

Terna Bansho Zero is hyper Asian Fantasy Roleplaying! Designed to have a story structure similar to anime, and many concept from them. Drive a giant robot! Be part machine! Have a giant bug jump out of your mouth to bite someone! http://www.tenra-rpg.com/

The Maid RPG! An RPG where you play a Maid! Is it stupid sounding? Of course it is! That's half the point! It's an RPG "inspired" by maid culture in Japan! http://www.maidrpg.com/

Golden Sky Stories! It's an RPG designed to warm your heart! Be an animal spirit who wonders an old fashion town helping the people in need! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nekoewen/golden-sky-stories-heartwarming-role-playing
