The Heroic/Paragon/Epic triad is actually about the only new name I've seen so far that I *do* like. Although 'mythic' instead of 'epic' would be pretty sweet.

Sure, it's fine. I don't intend on using it, but it's fine. I doubt my game will ever go past heroic.

Actually, I didn't really care until I got down to this post, but for some reason, Legendary just sounds better to me.

But I'm certainly no gonna complain if they keep it as Paragon.

I wouldn't want Mythic to be a step below Epic.

I agree. Mythic instead of Epic sounds right to me.

Alternately, Mythic should be the levels above Epic. We don't really have a good feel for how powerful the characters in the 21-30 levels are. If it seems appropriate to increase them to simulate things like the great mythic heroes (say hercules) then mythic could be the "new epic" of levels 31-40 with optional rules.

'Paragon' has two problems that I see. First, it's not really an adjective. Second, you can't have someone above a paragon. A paragon is the best there is. What they are trying to do with it is like having these three tiers--good, best, bestest.

I think 'legendary' would have been a better choice.

Some Dragon editor once had an editorial on unusual words he learned from D&D, D&D has always being tossing obscure words about, prestidigation, lycanthrope, dweomer and so forth paragon is not out of the ordinary and if it is on a shelf adventure modules some of which are marked 'Heroic' and some 'Paragon' and some more 'Epic' and picking out one or two the punter sees in the blurb that the heroic one is for level 1 to 3 and the paragon one is 14 - 16 and the epic one is 28-30 the punter will figure out that in D&D terms paragon is higher level than heroic and not as high sa epic with out ever finding that paragon can be used as a substitute for exemplar and will still know enough to use it correctly in D&D terms.
