'Paragon' has two problems that I see. First, it's not really an adjective. Second, you can't have someone above a paragon. A paragon is the best there is. What they are trying to do with it is like having these three tiers--good, best, bestest.

I think 'legendary' would have been a better choice.

I did think the definition and word useage felt a little funny.

It goes: Heroic > Paragon > Epic
Shouldn't 'Heroic < Paragon < Epic'.

Anyway, nitpicking aside, I think 'Paragon' is fine, and voted as such. I wouldn't be mortally upset if they chaged it to mythic, though.

Actually Mythic is something greater than Epic. Mythic beings are something closer to the gods. Myths are in the collective unconsciousness of a country or world, something that is just there, it doesn't matter how.
Probably that would be a great name for the 4th Tier (levels 31 to 40), where players fight and slay gods. Epic is too soon for that, maybe.

So, no way mythic would substitute paragon. And "paragon" is just fine, anyway...

Ultimately the names don't concern me, but as a DM I do not like this implication that first level adventurers are already heroes. I can just see the players arguing, "But, you can't do that to us, we're Heroic adventurers!"

If it were up to me I would prefer something more along the lines of:
Levels 1-2: Monster Chow
Levels 3-6: More than just a Red Shirt
Leves 7-10: Heroic
Levels 11-20: Xtreme Adventurers
Levels 21-30: Da Bomb

Not necessarily. One of the definitions provided by dictionary.com is "a model or pattern of excellence or of a particular excellence." A paragon is not necessarily the best of something, but can be merely an excellent example of something.

Read the rest of the definitions then--perfection, ideal, peerless...You can't just pick and choose partial meanings to make words mean what you want them to.

"Paragon" has got to be the least offensive of the new names.

A very good point.

Don't know too much about how this name is being brought in, but to me an 'Elf paragon' relates to a character which represents the model behavioural traits and attributes of an elf. For instance the 'Legendary' Mr Do'Urden could never be a Drow Paragon as he doesn't follow the racial map for Drow. It could be argued that he could be a Ranger Paragon but there are too many variables on what a Ranger can be for that to be easily workable.

I only use this as an example because bringing in a 'Paragon' class, to me, is more like suggesting another way of playing a character (ie in complete line with racial descriptions) rather than a level classification. 'Paragoning' should therefore be something that happes at character creation not at a certain level.

Just an opinion, but I like the dictionary idea better than WoTC's
