Read the rest of the definitions then--perfection, ideal, peerless...You can't just pick and choose partial meanings to make words mean what you want them to.
Dude, this is English we're talking about here. Many words have multiple meanings, some subtly different than others. One definition of paragon involves excellence rather than perfection. You don't need to consider every definition of a word if you found one that fits - or should we consider that is means an unusually large, round pearl as well?

Notice the verb definitions, which involve comparing, matching and paralleling, not exceeding or being the absolute best. Actually, one of the verb definitions is to surpass, but that one is marked as obsolete.

Some of the definitions involve perfection, others excellence. WotC is obviously using it in the excellence sense, not the perfection sense.

I can't believe this discussion is even happening. Let's get back to something important: isn't Warlord a stupid name for a class? Who's with me?

See your point, but the word is, in its definition, describing a state of a thing - even in naming it. If it were perfect it would be named as such. This is also clear from its usage in this case. (to me anyway)

Warlord -
1. A high military officer in a warlike nation.
2. A local ruler or bandit leader usually where the government is weak

going adventuring...nah. Taking a band of men to butcher a village...sure. Not much of a story set up. Would suggest Warlord (Retired) - but since retired Warlords normally get retired on the end of a spear then its not such a likely scenario.

P.s. I'll go with the last choice on the pole. an adventure is an adventure. If you can smite Dragons from the sky like there's plenty of tomorrows great. If you come across a dragon and you're not powerful enough to take it on, however Run. For the love of mercy Ruuuuuuuuuunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.....!!!! :uhoh:

Could work if it was a village of orcs, I suppose. Or a valley full of caves, each housing a different type of evil humanoid creature who have neat stuff to take, if only you could kill them first.

Yeah, I too was with the "don't care" crowd right up until I read some posts in this thread and realized: "Hey, 'legendary' and 'mythic' do sound cooler than the existing names." Maybe WotC needs to just create place-holder names, then ask the folks at ENWorld to name everything for them.

If it were up to me I would prefer something more along the lines of:
Levels 1-2: Monster Chow
Levels 3-6: More than just a Red Shirt
Yeah, this sentiment is why I never played a game below 3rd level. I want to play an RPG where my beginning character struggles against evil yet triumphs, not one where the first three levels are spent running away in terror from housecats.

Makes me think of Stargate.
I love Stargate.

Anyhow, I think Paragon is fine, and here's why.

As it seems to me, each level tier has a general type of character motivation. As the tiers rise in power, so do the responsibilities. Let me remind you that this powers are against normal people, non-pc people and mundane settings. The following assumes there are no other players that could rival you (like another PC or DM PC).

1-10: Personal power. This tier would be suitable against civil issues, low class problems. Example: Battling other goodly races and minor monsters, earning enough to make a way in the world. Surviving.

11-20: Global power. Paragons would be able to fight on a material level. As middle class issues arrive, the character would be nominal against them, including defeating an army, battling high end mortal monsters, running a military nation, Planetary protection, advancing society.

21-30: Planar power. Epic level characters are set in line to battle deities and the powers that make up the planes. Able to create and rule worlds, or an entire plane, epic players are legends, rulers and powerful. Would be able to destroy or create a nation nearly single handedly.

Paragon can't be translated easily (parangon has another meaning : exemplar). So, I will choose legendary. Because mythic seems on equal footing with epic, maybe even higher level (Zeus or prometheus are higher level than Ulysses or even Hercule).
