I buy both painted and unpainted figs (though I buy more of the painted plastic kind now). I've used minis in my games from the beginning.

I buy metal minis, paint them, and love having them in the game. Occaisonally, I will also purchase a prepainted plastic miniature.

In desperation, I will sometimes resort to counters or coins, but I've spent too many hours arguing over combat positions with players to go back to using "nothing but the imagination."

Since this isn't multiple choice, I can't really answer...

We have 2-3 combats per session, but we only use a battleboard once a session at most. When we do use the battleboard, we use both metal minis (hand-painted and unpainted), counters, rubber critters, and other handy bits.

I use lots of old plastic minis from Heroquest, hundreds of Mage Knight minis, a small handful of WotC minis, a handful of metal minis I bought and painted for when it's cheaper to do that than get the prepainted plastic (mind flayers and beholders for example). I've used lego figures on rare occasion, and paper counters or little lego models of monsters when nothing else would work.

So, most of the above :)

I use my imagination alongside my miniatures. Afterall it was the miniatures I saw back in 1979 that sparked my imagination to find out how to use these in a game. Eventually I found the RPG game (but not before some crazy games of Risk :) )

After all these years I have enough minis to field armies - but I still buy the WotC pre-painted ones.

I voted that I buy and paint my own, but really I needed a multiple choice poll as I don't use them all the time, and I also use counters as well.

We have a collection of several thousand lead and lead pewter figures. Hundreds have been painted - 1500+ have not.

While we sometimes still use the metal miniatures, this is only if we have to. We have moved almost entirely to plastic now. We got em all from every single set released - with further collections of 50-100 of same figure of over a dozen types to use as armies. Goblins, hobgoblins, draconians, humans dwarves and elves - we got em.

The members of my gaming circle have a collection of thousands of plastic pre-painted miniatures now. We use them every session and are very pleased with the figures and how they add to our game. We began to use Digital Map Projection to take advantage of and use these minis *more* in our games.

It adds greatly to the immersion and fun.
