Definitely faster, smarter, better. I've always been a fan of hybrid D&D. Take what you consider to be the best parts of the different editions and leave the rest in the box. If they can pull it off in some kind of cohesive manner, DDN has the potential to be the game that I've been trying to create for years.

To me though, every new edition of D&D is basically driven by those that simply just really don't like D&D.

Look at the horror many expressed over dungeon exploring being in 5e.

So personally I say, let D&D be D&D, and people who don't like it should move on to other games that simply aren't D&D.

The only reason you should play D&D is because you like D&D, don't try to make it into something it's not, just because you want something else.

I'd love an edition that faster, better, smarter. I'm always about making things better. But then if that's the stated goal why make an article about bringing back old failed ideas that clearly didn't work before. As much as it's good to listen to your customers designers also need to realize that they need to rub some actual brain-cells together on their own as well. I don't care if 99% of the people who answer that poll demand gender-specific ability maximums. That doesn't mean it should actually become a part of the game. Sadly, this set of designers looks too timid to kill the sacred cows and appears to instead be courting them to capture that "sacred cow feel".

But D&D isn't a religion. It's just a game. They're just cows.

Kill em already.

This is what got us into this edition warzone in the first place. WotC "updating" the game while trying to shut down access to pre-update material.

Not everybody agrees with what's an update.

If you literally would refuse to implement something that 99% of people were asking for, you're telling your customers what to want instead of listening to what they want. That's just classic business fail.

D&DN needs to do that. Or else its a no-buy.

I don't mean to be rude, but I am skeptical that this is true. Or at least that your attitude is representative of a significant number of people.

People who are meh, not thrilled -- still buy.

People who are alienated don't.

We have low standards. It's true! This is fine.

I don't buy D&D for innovative, cutting edge game design. I want to give them my money for a) a nice book with cool artwork b) the IP they're sitting on and c) membership into the community of people playing the most popular RPG.

You don't have to create the perfect game. Just make people happy enough to not complain.

That kinda rhymes. That's my protest chant.

Faster? Yes.
Smarter? How can a game be "smarter" than another game?
Better? Yes. Now, define "better" in a way that includes this poster...
But D&D isn't a religion. It's just a game. They're just cows.

Kill em already.
...and myself, to whom many of the "sacred cows" *are* the game.

I'd love it -- as long as I agree with the implementation. ;)

As others have said, this time feels different. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt, right now. What do I have to lose? I haven't bought a D&D book in two years and they can't take the books off my shelf.

When I was young and pretentious, I LOVED the AD&D rulebooks: hard to read, full of Latin abbreviations (q.v., i.e., et.al., etc.), complicated subsystems, truly arcane.

Now, I want a game with rules that make internal sense from the get-go, and that new players can learn in a single session.

I read better, faster, smarter to mean quicker resolution, more intuitive mechanics, and replicating the feel of previous editions with less oddities and rules chafe. Assuming I'm reading that correctly, then yes I want better, faster, smarter.
