Oak frames are nice, black velvet is most definitely not. ?

Strange, i think the black velvet makes the Elvis paintings in my front room look even nicer.........

As to the price, $50 is steep but not too steep if you really like that character. The fact that you can commission a specialized pic and the art is pretty good makes it almost worth it, to the right person. Unfortunatly the 2 campaigns i'm playing in are Return to the Tomb of Horrors and Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil so my characters' life expectancy is shorter than it would take to draw a sketch of them.

At $20, yeah i'd probably buy 2. You might wanna try a 'one for $40 or 2 for $55' type thing, most players have more than one favorite character.

so, after materials, how much is it you are assuming the artists time is worth?

Artists are universally not rated by their time but their quality.

50$ for a full color illustration of some quality is not expensive at all nowadays.

So true, so true. And considering that a full-sized work by a major artist like Michael Whelan or Donato Giancola will cost you well into 5 figures, $50 for something you like starts to look rather tasty. ;-)

I mentioned it in another thread, but I am Extremely pleased with my Doc Midnight artwork.

A good point to make is that the picture I commissioned was for my wife who plays a biped Turtle Jedi in our D20 Star Wars game.

If she was playing a "human fighter" or a "halfling rogue", I probably wouldn't pay for the picture either, I'd use a generic one.

But Doc Midnight took something born in my wife's imagination and depicted it perfectly. Anyone who has ever collaborated with a talented artist can tell you that it is a great feeling to see your ideas come to life like that!

So if you're looking for generic RPG artwork, you might not want to shell out the $50, but if you want to see your half-dragon Death Knight (and his undead wyvern mount) in all his full-color glory, E-mail Doc.

You'll be glad you did.

But they get paid for their time, based on that quality. $100 is below average for me. $50 is WAY below average for me. If I'm charging someone for CD cover art, or a big meaty piece for a commercial client, I'm probably charging several hundred. The difference is that I'm doing it for gamers here... throwin' some love around for my ENworlders.

as an artist, who knows mostly artists, who spends his time with artists, i can tell you that you are terribly wrong.

I would love to buy things like this, but I hesitate simply because characters die. Oh it'd be so irksome to get quality art like the Doctor's and then turn around and the next weekend have that character perm. Excellent homages to old characters though.

I'd also love to commission a piece, as I've been to Doc's site drooling over his work before he cut the price, but unfortunately my wallet is hurting right now. I sent all my spare RPG cash for the next couple of months to Morrus. I'll put it on my birthday wish list, maybe that will get me somewhere...

$50 is cheap for artwork. My son's godfather is an artist (woodcarver/jeweler) so I know just how much time and energy it takes to create a work of art, and yeah, that time is definitely worth something.
