Again, in terms of them being grabbed when they were in the basement, the whole trick was that they couldn't look at each other, which meant they had to be cautious. That's my take on it.

Which raises an interesting point- how could they coordinate their efforts if they can't acknowledge one another's presence? Telepathy maybe?

It's not possible - In the real world. But the Doctor-Who universe is not as boring as ours.
