D&D (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

That is an extremely dopey stance.

Unless WotC is doing something unusually predatory in their distribution policies -- which, to be sure, CCG and comic distributors have done at times -- them saying they won't carry the brand leader in roleplaying games is just a roundabout way of saying they're going to shut down their store in the next few years.
They are saying they will have the new version for sale, not the old one, and that is what should be played at their tables.

For an FLGS, especially one that's paying DMs, it's important that buyers aren't walking into a store and finding that all the DMs refuse to use the new books. When I was running my game using the only available table in the store, I made sure to keep my game as open to new books and updates and official lore as possible, specifically to make sure it was the best possible ad for the store's goods.

I even made a rule that let people use those stupid random card packs at the cost of a feat to keep things balanced.

Do they understand that the game will be, to a great extent, compatible? Even at the most extreme examples of what we've seen, an adventure published in 2016 or 2020 will still work just fine with the 2024 rules. WotC will be continuing to sell those, as we've seen with the new mass-market version of Tyranny of Dragons.
I assume they do, this is more for new players testing the game, enjoying their first char and then wanting to buy the PHB, only to learn that their class is not in it, but a similar one is.

You do not want to go through that, and the only way to avoid it is to enforce 1DD

Yeah, this doesn't seem all that crazy really. It's really clear they're primarily running on-site gaming as an advertisement (a totally reasonable position, though I have definitely seen some stores that lean more toward trying to be more coffee-shop esque 3rd spaces for gamers), and it makes sense to funnel people toward the new product you're going to keep selling (and to try and pick up sales from existing customers who want the new stuff).

I mean, this exact thing was the reason people complained about the 3e-3.5 transition.

I knew strong-arm tactics would enter into this eventually.

I would expect that as we draw nearer to the release, WotC will simply stop printing the current 5E books in favor of the new, and then retailers will go through their stock of them until gone. I don't think there's anything strange about that.

As we get closer to the 6E launch, we will see if there are going to be many significant changes. I suspect that there will be to encourage people to get the new books, but we just don't know yet.

I suspect there will be all sorts of events for launch, and that we'll have plenty of limited edition 6E books too. New players will certainly be attracted to the books. I'm sure those limited edition collectors books will also grab many existing players.

Difference: it has been 10 years, not just 3 until they do their refresh. Seems like a healthy refresh cycle... It is just that D&D gamers are strange... they seem to be proud using rules, no sane younger person would ever use...
