Does anyone know where I can find stats for a Dire Spider?

A reason why they are monstrous and not dire.

Dire animals all have those freaky bone spikes.

Spiders have no bones, ergo no dire spiders. ;)

Take a close look at cricket legs... you want to talk about spikes...

Maybe no bones, but they have exoskeletons!

It's all good.

There are a couple of dire creatures (Dire Kobold and Dire Troll) that aren't animals, but alas there's no dire spider (unless, as noted, you use either the Monstrous Spider or the Dire Template).

Well, it seems that this one has already been taken care of. My comments:
Rats in D&D are considered animals. Though we may be used to referring to dirty little critters like rats, roaches, spiders, and ants as vermin, in D&D, the title "vermin" only applies to insects & arachnids and things like that. The difference from vermin to animal is an Intelligence score. That's all. For your own game, call them whatever you like and dress them up as you see fit. Making them look and act differently than other types is great fun. Think Sheelob. :)
